PART 49 “FLIRTATIOUS”
Opeyemi Akintunde
AS INSPIRED BY THE LIVING WORD

Ever since we broke the news to her, she didn’t stand up from that position, despite her husband prostrating, she didn’t move away from there. She didn’t even close her eyes for 24hours.

Suddenly, she fell to her side like someone who collapsed.

We rushed her to the hospital and the doctor told us after placing her on a life support, that she was in a state of shock.

Mr. Teju didn’t leave her side for the two weeks she was in the hospital.

Meanwhile, my mother and I were at home. My mother showed no sympathy, she was eating, drinking and watching home videos.

Eventually, when Mr. Teju came back home, he came in as a brutal lion chasing my mother and I out of the house. He was saying a lot, cursing me and cursing the day we walked into his life. I wanted to ask him about the state of Mrs. Teju’s health, but there was no chance for it… He called the pregnancy a curse….

He kept issuing a lot of curses on the unborn baby, me and my mother.

My mother in anger went to Mummy J’s house telling her, she was going to show Mr. Teju the stuff she was made of.

“That useless wife, the empty container he is choosing over my daughter will eventually die, I swear” My mother said

I believe Mummy J knew my mother was not joking about her threat, so she decided to be a peace maker….

“You don’t have to go that far, Iya Yemi”

“What do you mean? He seduced my daughter, got her pregnant and then threw her out like refuse.”

“Iya Yemi, don’t blame him… I can tell you when he calms down, he will accept the pregnancy”

“He better accepts it easily or else he will lose that wife and forcefully without his senses intact anymore, he will marry my daughter”

“Iya Yemi, from what you both said is happening, his wife is still not okay, that alone can make him mad at this moment. My advice is take Yemi with you to the village, come back in two months’ time, I believe then things will be calmer.”

“Follow who? Me? to the village? God Forbid. You want people to call me names in the village… Never, I refuse to be disgraced. She stays here in Lagos” My mother denied me.

“Ok… don’t worry, she will stay with me” mummy J said…

I thought I would only stay with Mummy J for only two months, but it stretched to me staying the remaining four months of the pregnancy, because Mr. Teju flew his wife abroad for better treatment…

Mrs. Teju’s mother came to Mummy J’s house accusing her of hatching the evil plan. She told her, Mrs. Teju had been flown abroad for psychiatric treatment, she threatened that if her child didn’t get any better, she was going to ensure Mummy J goes to jail.

Mummy J, therefore didn’t release me from her house. She told me I was the culprit hence, if anything happened to Mrs Teju, I was going to be held responsible.

My mother on the other hand, abandoned me with Mummy J, turning around and accusing me of having a bad head. She went on and on about how Adekemi would not have been unfortunate like me, if she was the one given the opportunity.

At the end of the Nine months journey I gave birth to a baby boy, who was a splitting image of Mr. Teju.

Mummy J got hold of Mr. Teju’s international number, she called him to inform him about the arrival of the baby….

“Mummy J, I have no child anywhere”

“Mr. Teju, the boy looks like you, I am not asking you to have anything to do with Yemi, but accept the boy. He is yours. See him as a blessing for you and your wife….”

“Which wife? The wife Yemi and her mother made insane. Mummy J my wife now has mental problem and that’s what I nurse here. I don’t have time to nurse any child. If they don’t know where to put him, send him to one of those orphanages….

Mr. Teju had ended the call, and I thought that was the end of me….

PART 50 “FLIRTATIOUS”
Opeyemi Akintunde
AS INSPIRED BY THE LIVING WORD

It actually began like the end for me because Mummy J made life a living hell for me. I became her maid.
God decided to have mercy on me when Mummy J got Born again….

A popular evangelist came to our vicinity for a crusade, and mummy J encountered Christ. It was her new life that made her soften her hands towards me. My boy was already one year when she called me for a discussion.

“Yemi, I am sorry for how I have been treating you…. I have been thinking about you, these past few days. Do you want to continue your education?”

I was shocked at the apology and the question but I nodded in the positive as a response to her question.

“Ok…. I cannot afford your old school; I will enroll you in a public school”.
“Thank you ma”

I returned to school, and everything was going on well until one day, when I got home and Mummy J sat me down to have another heart to heart …

“Adeyemi, I met a woman three weeks ago, who runs an organization of helping young girls who give birth too early and are not able to take care of their children” Mummy J said
My first thought was that the said woman gave them money but I was wrong….

“She helps them look for waiting parents who may want to adopt the child and give them a better life.”

I was silent at this point…

“I told her about you and she told me that presently there is a family looking for a boy to adopt.”

I maintained my silence.

So I was thinking you should consider it for Iremide. Let’s give Iremide a better life than you had, because from all indication Mr. Teju is not coming back for him.

I believe for the next few minutes I felt a great numbness all over me…

“Think about it…” She said

****
I thought about it, I thought about the state I was in and how Iremide’s life would be if I continued to keep him. He was going to end up in a public school like me that was if Mummy J enrolled him on time. I looked at Mummy J’s children; I still spoke better English than they did courtesy of the three years I spent in Mr. & Mrs. Teju’s house. I knew it was better I gave Iremide up…

On the day of the adoption, I refused going with Mummy J, I had signed the necessary papers, but I told mummy J I couldn’t watch some strangers take away my baby.
The adoptive family gave us some money which I used in completing my secondary education and university education.

After my university education, I began to long for my child. I wanted to see him, but Mummy J would not give me the phone number of the woman or those who adopted him…

I fell into depression, got into a lot of terrible acts; smoking, drinking, clubbing, prostituting and that made Mummy J insist I leave her house.

I left, went into full blown prostitution. It was during one of my escapades, that I met a man who gave me his card. He told me to come visit him at his office.
