CRYSTAL

I remembered he told me he had sisters, maybe she’s the sister.

“Oba” she called and hugged him.

“Ayo! When did you come back?”

“Not too long, my mum said you are not feeling fine. Since it’s weekend I decided to come home then I can use that opportunity to see how you are faring” she explained.

One thing is sure now, she is not Oba’s sister. I just kept quiet looking at the both of them. Aside the hi….hi we said to each other.

“Yes, your mum checked on me yesterday but you don’t have to come all the way from Abeokuta to Lagos because of me”

“It’s nothing, anything for my Oba” she said and I was like ‘my Oba’
We finally entered after their meet and greet. Oba introduced us.

“Crystal meet my landlord’s daughter, Ayo. Ayo my very good friend, Crystal” he introduced.

She didn’t look like someone who wants to exchange handshake so I kept my hands where it belongs. Infact if looks could k!ll, I’ll be six feet under already. I just ignored her, sat on one of the plastic chairs and took out the chilled bottle water I bought on our way back.

“I can see you’re coming from the hospital” she already saw the customized plastic bag of drugs we got from the hospital in my hand.

“Yes, your family hospital” he said.

“How do you feel?” She asked touching him.

“Better, thanks”

“Good, let me quickly go into the kitchen and prepare you something. What do you feel like eating?”

“I don’t feel like eating anything”

I don’t like the answer he gave her. So I had to come in unconsciously though, because I never plan to interfere in their discussion.

“Oba you have to eat, you took only custard in the morning and you didn’t finish the drink you took at the hospital” I stated.

“Okay…. I’ll take anything liquid”

“Don’t tell me you want to take custard again, you….

“I’ll prepare swallow for you, that will give you strength” Ayo cut in, interrupting me. But I didn’t care all I want is for Oba to just eat something.

“She’s right Oba, swallow is better. So which one do you prefer?” I asked him.

“Anyone” he said and turned weakly on the bed.

“Let me go to my place to make it. I’ve checked the kitchen you don’t have stew except food stuffs” Ayo offered.

“No, you don’t have to that. You just came back from school go and rest. Crystal will take it from here. Thanks” he said declining her offer.

I did not bother to look into her eyes because it’s sure spitting fire already infact the reply she gave Oba before leaving tells her temperature and that of a boiling water is almost the same.

OBA

Ayo really pissed me off. What a nerve she’s got. A lady is already with me and you expect me to allow you prepare some meal right in her presence! Even if Crystal is not around I still can’t allow her cook for me.

“Oba you shouldn’t have turned down her offer. It sounded rude” Crystal complained bitterly.

“I can’t allow just any girl to cook for me. And the way the girl is even…..

“But she has your key” She cut in, sounding like a jealous lover this time.

“Crystal you need to see the way the girl was on my neck just to have my key. I had to give her because she said she likes a quiet place and would like to read and relax here when I’m not around. And I expect her to inform me first not just barge into my apartment because she has the key or because she’s the landlord’s daughter” I explained hoping she won’t get the wrong message.

“Hmm….she said and that got me worried.

“Crystal! I called out. I left the bed and took a seat next to her. I reach for her hand and we held each other’s gaze.

“Oba go lie down and relax. You just came back from the hospital”

“I need to explain….

“See you don’t owe me any explanation”

“Don’t say that”

That girl likes you”

“And I love you!” I confessed and she withdrew her hand immediately I said the L- word.

I took her hand again, she shifted uncomfortably on her seat.

“Crystal this may not be the right or appropriate time. I know I’m sick and all but I’ve been rehearsing this for a very long time now. Crystal I’m in love with you. If you wouldn’t mind my status. I want to date you” I said pouring out my heart. She still held my gaze but said nothing.

“Crystal, say something. Please….”

“To be honest, I feel the same way but Oba….

“No but Crystal. Forget about Ayo. I don’t owe her anything. I’m just a tenant in her father’s house and I don’t live here for free, I pay my rent and every other bills. Worst case scenario, I’ll leave this place”

“Oba that girl is obsess with you. I can’t deal with someone with crazy obsession. I don’t want…..”Shh….. forget her”

“Ok. Now go and lie down boyfriend”

“Yes ma” I said and smiled.

“Is there any market close by so I can go get ingredients to make soup. So you can eat something better than the custard you took in the morning” she enquired.

“You don’t have to bother, I have vegetable soup in the fridge. I made it a day before I fell sick. I intentionally not mentioned it to Ayo as I don’t want her to cook for me”

“Good, that will make things faster. Let me go prepare something for you then” she said.

Crystal opened the fridge and brought out the container where I kept the vegetable soup. She took it with her to the kitchen.
While she was in the kitchen, I took to the bathroom, I no longer feel cold so I took my bath.

Some minutes later, she was through in the kitchen. She served me semolina with the vegetable soup.

I asked her to join me but she said she wasn’t hungry. I persuaded her to take a piece of meat which she eventually did with a can of malt. She made sure I ate it all and I felt refreshed. I took my drugs, I guessed the drugs and injections are at work because I started feeling dizzy. Then I slept off.

CRYSTAL

I checked the time it’s more than one hour and Oba was still sleeping. I believe it was the effect of the injections and drugs.

I used the opportunity to do the dishes and clean up the kitchen without noise in order not to wake him. While I was in the room, my phone rang, I had to go to the kitchen to receive the call in order not to disturb his sleep.

I heard a knock and I hope it’s not the girl. I opened the door and speaking of the devil. She appeared before me. She stood there eyeing me from head to toe. I tried to be calm before I speak.

“Oba is sleeping” I said trying to sound friendly.

“So I can’t enter! Eh!” She said clapping her hands in a mockery way.

“I’m sorry but you’ll have to come back”

“Really! Can you please tell me the title of the little romance drama you are shooting right now”

“Seriously! Ok come in then and see for yourself” I opened the door wider.

“There’s no point coming inside. Have him now I’ll come back when you are long gone” she hissed and left.

“God! What’s the meaning of all this” I said audibly to my hearing. I closed the door and went back inside.

Dad called and mum spoke to me as well. They asked after Oba and I told them the situation of things and that he is much more better than earlier when I came.
Oba stirred from sleep. I sat on the bed and place my hand on his forehead to feel his temperature which is now normal. I smiled as he opened the eyes.

“How long did I sleep?” He asked.

“Almost two hours”

“That’s long, so you are just here all alone. I’m sure I’ve bored you”

“Don’t worry about me, you need that sleep. How do you feel now?”

“Much better, all thanks to you”

“I’m not the doctor or the nurse who treated you”

“You know what I mean”

“Anyways, Ayo came by to check on you” That was all I said, I left the melodrama part.

“Ok. When are you leaving, today is third Saturday, you should be hanging out with your girlfriends”

“So you still remember my schedule?”

“I was once your driver Crystal, so I know all your daily routine” he said.

“Then I need to change my routine, so you won’t start stalking me” I said playfully and he smiled.

“Thanks so much, I know the reason why your friends adore you. You are a friend everyone would long to have in their lives”

“Don’t flatter me. I plan to stay with you all day, so I already talked with my friends. They know I won’t be coming” I informed.

He thanked me again and we got talking. I prepared a warm beverage for him to take his four hourly drugs.

By 6pm, Oba insist I leave that it’s getting late.

“Ok ooo, I’ll leave but at least let me make dinner for you before leaving”

“I’m much better, I’ll get myself something to eat”

“No, I won’t take that. What do you want for dinner?”

“I don’t know”

“You see, you don’t know and you want me to leave. Oba talk, what should I prepare”

“Don’t worry, I’ll eat agidi”

“Do you have it here”

“No, I’ll go buy it”

I told him to describe the place to me after much persuasion. The place was down the street, so I bought some agidi for him. I kept it in the fridge and reminded him to go to the hospital the next day for his treatment. I left his house around 6:30pm.

I got home to an empty house. Mum was still with Dad. I changed and went downstairs to check out what’s going on at the Supermarket and pharmacy. I don’t know why I kept remembering that girl’s rude attitude and I don’t like that I’m feeling that way.

I decided to stayed at the pharmacy a bit and went back into the house. Not too long when I got in, mum arrived too.

ENITAN

I got back home from the girls hangout. I got a called from my fiance as I stepped into my room. Feso and I talked for a while. Both of us are meeting with my uncles the next day to finalize the wedding date. The eldest of them will walk me down the aisle on my wedding day. After the call. I took my bath, change into my night dress. I lay on my bed and redialed Crystal number. I already called earlier but she didn’t pick up.

“Hello”

“Enitan, I’m sorry I missed your call and that of others too. I was about to call you back” she apologized.

“Are you home now?”

“Yes, I got home not quite long”

“So why didn’t you show up, you just say you won’t be coming out to join us today. Are you ok?” I asked

“I’m fine. I was at Oba’s place, he wasn’t feeling well. You know he went to Enugu with Dad. So I got there and his condition required me to spend some time with him” she explained.

“Maybe it’s the stress, how is he feeling now?”

“Better than the way I met him”

“Crystal!”

“Yes”

“Something is wrong here. And don’t tell me it’s nothing. So spill it”

“Oba asked me out!”

“Wow!!! Well I’m not that surprised. I took a close look at him on your Dad’s house warming party. He’s eyes were all over you” I confessed.

“Enitan!”

“Don’t call my name. I wasn’t the only one who noticed”

“Jesus Christ!

“That’s why we let Soma off the hook. Since we sense you’ll move on anytime soon”

“Crystal’s circle. I fear you guys”
____________Toyin Taiwo

“You know we all can’t hide from each other. Back to Oba, what’s your response? Hope you didn’t turn him down” I asked.
“No, I didn’t. I had something for him too. I wanted too gist you guys earlier but I wanted to be sure”

“Crystal I expect you to be happy but you are not. Is it becomes of his….
“No Enitan, it’s just that there’s this girl I met at his place. She’s the landlord’s daughter and she’s obsess with Oba”

“What did he say or you didn’t ask him about the girl?”

“He said he has nothing to do with her. Though he agreed the girl has been all over him”

“Don’t bother your head Crystal. You are the one he loves. He will put the girl in her place. So relax”

“Enitan, you don’t get it. I’m in rivalry with an undergraduate for God sake”

“Oh! You want to sacrifice your happiness because you are not ready to contend with any woman!”

“Enitan this girl is not even in my level. So I’ll have to compete with her because of a man!”

“There’s no competition here. You have no business with her. Remember when Feso’s secretary was hitting on him. He was the one who put her in her place. So leave your man to sort it out”

“Ok ooo”

“Crystal, don’t ruin this beautiful relationship before it even start because of one girl. You deserve to be happy”

“I hear you and I feel relieved girlfriend. Thanks.

“You are welcome. Congratulations” I said cheerfully”

“Thanks dear”

I asked her when she’ll tell the others and she promised to tell them soon.

I was so happy when I ended the call. “At last” I said. We’ve all been worried for Crystal and finally she found love again. I’m sure the house will be happy about the news the only person who can bad mouth Oba is that big mouth Onochie. And

I’m sure the guys will shut him up. I’m glad everyone is taking. So the wedding bells should start ringing.

CRYSTAL

After Sunday service I went to check on Oba. I was happy with the way I met him. His face is much brighter now and the smiles has returned.
We hugged each other as he opened the door to me. He thanked me whole heartedly for taking care of him.
“Oba you’ve done much more for myself and my family. You don’t need to thank me” I said and he smiled.
I also asked him if he went to the hospital for his injections and he told me he went.

“How are you feeling now?”

“I feel like I can climb mountain Everest” We both laughed at this jokes.

“Now that I’m no longer sick. I hereby relieve you of all your nursing duties” he said jokingly.

“Seriously! I said and we both laughed. He hugged me one more time before I took a seat.

“How’s service?” He asked

“Awesome. Dad and Mum sent their regards”

“Yeah, they called me too. It’s like your mum is still at his place”

“Yes, but she came home last night. And she’s there now, she left for his place after the service. We had to take different cars to the church. But she’s coming back home today, work starts tomorrow”

“Those two should just get married abeg. They deserved to be happy after all this years”

“I think my dad is doing the wooing already. I pray mum agrees”
“She will, trust me” he assured.

I brought out the food I brought for him and told him I brought him food.

“When did you make this?”

“After service” I replied. I carried the food flask to the kitchen and served both of us.

I placed a plate of rice and chicken before him.
“Thank you….” He said salivating. “I will eat it well. I’m sure I’ll finish it all” he said.

“That’s what I want too. Now eat on” I said as I ate from my plate.
We finished eating and I cleared the dishes. I joined him later.

“Thanks for the delicious meal sweetheart”

“Hmm…. sweetheart!”

“What?”

“Nothing”

“I thought I’m free to call you that now that we are dating”

“Of course you can. I just heard you call me that for the first time. That’s all”

“Get use to it my darling cos I’ll use all the sweet words I can think of for you”

“Okay…… sweetheart” I said and he smiled.

“I love that!” He said.

The TV was on but no one is paying attention as we are engrossed in our discussion. I asked him his genotype

AA and I know you are AA too” He replied.

“Yes, I remembered you stylishly asked me some weeks back”

“Yes, I had to know before asking you out” he winked.

We talked about so many things. His family, his dreams and things we rarely know about each other. He also promised to take me to meet his family.

We heard a knock on the door and I need no one to tell me it was Ayo. Oba opened the door and speaking of the devil, she walked in with a bag in her hand. She didn’t greet me and I kept quiet too.

“Oba, I brought you lunch” she said smiling at him.

“That’s thoughtful of you but next time you shouldn’t have bothered. I just had lunch, my girlfriend brought me lunch” he said with a straight face.

“Girlfriend! But you said…..

“I know what I said yesterday! She’s my girlfriend Ayo. And if you want us to still remain friends then you have to respect her the way you respect me. Also, I just pretended I didn’t know you didn’t greet her when you came in”
____________Toyin Taiwo

“Oh! I thought I did” she defended and Oba feigned a smile.

“Anyways, thanks for the food. I’ll eat it in the evening”

She said she’ll come back for the food flask but Oba told him to wait and collect it.

He went into the kitchen with the food and came back with a washed food flask. He handed it to her.

“You washed it, you shouldn’t have bothered” She said

“That’s the right thing to do, thanks anyway”

She told him she’ll be leaving for school the next day and promised to check on him before leaving.

When she left, I went into the kitchen and saw the food inside a polythene bag. I smiled “This guy is wise” I said to myself.

I went back into the room. “Oba, I thought you’ll eat the food”

“Crystal I wasn’t born yesterday”

“Good” That was all I said.

I checked the time, it was past 5pm. I told him I was leaving so I could prepare for Monday. I reminded him to take his drugs and go for his last injection the next day. And he promised to do so. I also told him to rest for few days before he starts work and he should also call me if he needs anything.

He offered to see me off to the car but I told him not to bother.
I was about to unlock the car door, then I saw Ayo walking up to me. So I decided not to open the door yet. It was glaring that she was coming for me.

“What do you want from him?” She asked hands akimbo.

“You’ve got some nerves you know!” I faced her.

“This guy is not even your class. Why can’t you leave him for people like us who are not as high and mighty as you are” she said while I remain silent.
She continued. “Look at the car you’re cruising and you are dating a cab driver.

Don’t you have men from your caliber you can date!” She said and I just smiled.
____________Toyin Taiwo

“I wish you knew my ex and how rich and classy he is but I don’t date for class. I date for love”

“You love a guy who can’t afford to take care of you to your taste. I’m still a student and still have few years ahead of me and by the time I’m through, Oba would have upgraded his standard and I can marry him”

I unlocked the car door and entered the car and closed the door while she was standing there watching me.

I whined down the glass half way for me to see her eye ball to eye ball.
