EPISODE 1 & 2
Mama and Papa were fighting again that morning. She was screaming like a mad woman as Papa pounced on her. All I could do, me..Nnena a 14 year old girl was to stand away, hearing the loud thud of mama on the floor. As usual, neighbors gathered to separate while some laughed and turned them into a free cinema. Our small town already knows us as a popular free television show. I was tired of crying. I always cried when they fight but that particular day, the tears just couldn’t come. Nobody had my time. I even stopped going to school a long time ago when Papa lost his position in his military work. Since then, he has been a frustrated man who always got himself drunk. Mama was a lazy woman who wouldn’t go out and work like her fellow woman.
With this, Papa always had a batch with her. ‘You foolish man… shameless idiot!
You expect me to go out and work? You expect me to go out and work to feed you? It will never work for you! It shall never be well with you! Idiot…stupid man…who is even calling you a man?
When men are talking, animals like you are not supposed to talk! Yes!You are a stupid animal who is supposed to live in a thick bush!’, mama shouted at Papa that morning.
And what next? Papa escaped from the grasp of the neighbors and pounced on her again.
I couldn’t bear to watch the insult and embarrassment. I quietly left the noisy atmosphere and bolted through the back door of our small compound. It was still early in the morning and I haven’t had my bath nor lunch. It was chilly outside my house as I walked to no where in particular.
My town was not really a village but it was somehow small. I’ve started noticing some few changes about myself as I grew up. As someone who wasn’t taught about growing stuffs,I found it strange when I saw two small balls growing out of my chest and becoming visible in a my clothes. I also noticed boys were now staring at me more often but what do I know?
I thought they were only looking at me and making jeat of me because of my parents.
I had no friend. The only friend I had was Dede, from childhood but we have long been separated when I was only 6 years old. He was a boy and my only friend in my town. And since he left, getting another friend even when I was schooling has proved abortive and impossible.
I returned home in the afternoon, feeling hungry like something else. Mama was nowhere to be found even Papa. Everywhere has returned to normal and luckily for me, I saw yam in the kitchen which I ate in a quick succession. I soon carried water to the bathroom to take my bath.
As I removed my clothings and underwear i saw blood in my panties. My eye balls grew wider with fright. What was happening to me? I never knew it was my period because nobody taught me. I couldn’t take my bath again as I ran out of the bathroom and ran into the sitting room.
I sat down on a stool, unable to stand up because I was so afraid. I sat down till I dozed off…
I woke up to strong hands touching me recklessly and so hard on my new growing breasts.
I jerked up from sleep and looked around. It was dark in the room and Papa was standing in front of me, staggering so badly that he wanted to fall. I was alarmed that he has been the one touching my breasts. I found it so embarrassing. His hands found my chest again.
‘Nne…what..what are these on your chest..?,he said drunked,as he fell on top of me. What was he trying to do? I had no idea but I knew it was something bad. I felt his man hood on my skirt as he put his hand down my laps. I tried to scream but could not when I found put my mouth has been covered. Mama was still no where around. With all the power an 11 year old could muster, I kicked Papa’s knee with all my might. He shouted painfully and let go. ‘You demonic child… come back here!!’. He screamed after me. I couldn’t stop running away my heart felt as if it would fall. ‘Nnena…come back here!!!’,he screamed again as I ran out of the house never returning and never looking back…….
I continued running. I didn’t know where I was going but I also knew I will never go back to that house again. The saying was home sweet home but ours was home bitter home.
With the little money in my skirt pocket, I boarded a bus to another town entirely.
I never knew I had gone so far until 6pm in the evening when I realized I had also lost my way.
I found an empty store and sat down, the tears rushing down my face. I was just a child… with no one to care for. I looked at the back of my skirt, there was stain on it…blood. What do I do with myself now? I stood up from the place I was sitting down and tried to hide the stain on my skirt.
Where would I go to? It was getting dark. I walked into a street with big houses.
I stopped at each houses, looking at it and wishing it was my house cos it looked so beautiful and peaceful. The street was quiet but there were few people looking at me. I must look so strange.
I came across a particular house and saw a notice on it. A maid was needed. I thought it was a blessing and time for me to see where to lay my head. I looked all over at myself.
Will they accept me? I did not bother to think about it and knocked at the large gate. No response. I knocked again. No response. Then at the fourth knock, I heard the grumbling of a man who was no doubt the gate man. ‘Who is out there by this time of the day!’, he shouted as he opened a little space on the small gate. He pocked his eyes out and I watched it grew large with amazement. He snatched away his head and closed the space on the gate. I heard him opening the gate. He came out and stared at me… I was stood bold and greeted him. That has always been the good thing about me. I was always bold in front of people especially those I was meeting for the first time. ‘I saw a notice in front of here and I was thinking if I can apply’, I said.
The man in his early 40 stared at me. He looked at me for a little while and aved his head, indicating no. ‘I don’t think Madam needs a child like you. She wants adult who will not only serve as an ordinary house maid but she also wants a nanny for her daughter’, the gate man said.
I liked him instantly because he took his time to explain things to me while also talking reasonably. ‘Sir…make my presence known first…there is nothing I can’t do…I can do anything.
Am not just a child, am very strong’, I said eagerly. The gate man told me to come inside.
He closed the gate and asked me to wait there beside the gate as he left. I looked around the house. Heavenly father…it was magnificent. I thought there must be royalties living in the house. I saw movement upstairs in the mansion and looked up. The gate man was standing behind a beautiful woman, richly dressed and adorned with costly make ups and jewelries. She was staring at me with no expression on her face. I bowed down my head, looking downward.
They were talking about me and she was probably deciding whether to bring me inside the house. She turned and went back inside while the gate man came down to meet me.
He was smiling at me. “Small aunty, please come with me’, he said to me.
My heart made a fast double flip as I followed him into the building.
It was well decorated and huge. In the first living room, the woman I saw earlier sat on a large cushion. She looked at me as we came to her.
I stood boldly although I had my own fears. ‘Ma,I’ve brought her in’, the gate man said.
‘Yes a I can see that…you may go’, the woman said and looked at me as the gate man left.
‘What do you want? ‘she asked. I told her about the notice outside and also told her I wanted to apply. ‘You are not only going to be a maid…can you take care of my daughter who is about your age?’, she asked. ‘Yes ma’…there is nothing I can’t do’, I answered.
Just then, the main entrance door opened and noises filled the room from two nagging people. ‘I don’t have to be your reporter! Report it yourself that you fought again today…fighter!’, a boy shouted as they came into view. I turned to look at them. The woman’s kids…no doubt. They stared at me before greeting their mother. ‘Mum, who is this?’, the girl who was my age asked.
She stared at me with disdain unlike the boy, who stared at me with amazed expression.
‘Oh, Tiffany…it’s our new maid, she came today and wants to apply for the maid job’, the woman said. Tiffany looked at me again. ‘Are you sure this one will be able to do what Mofe was doing when she was here?’, Tiffany asked. I looked at her, surprised at the hardness in her tune.
I thought she was too small for that voice.
The woman whose name I latter found out as Madam Margret smiled.
‘Don’t worry darling, she will…as you can see, she is willing to work here’, Madam Margret said.
‘I wonder when this will even stop… can’t you ever do anything on your own?’, her brother said, walking upstairs.
Tiffany sneered at him and she stared a over at me. ‘Follow me to my room’, she told me and walked away. I followed her upstairs to her room.
I was amazed. It was as huge as the sitting room. A little girl like her? Her room was well decorated and arranged with beautiful teddy bears all over the bed. She put off her school jacket and turned to look at me. ‘In my house here, I have a set of rules for any maid who is gonna work here. I won’t waste my time to read it out…hope you can read English?’, she asked and I nodded.
She handed a list over to me. ‘When you go out there you can read it.
I will show you your room but before that, get some of the clothes in that basket washed’, she said pointing to a large basket beside the door. I turned to look and felt my heart beat stop.
There, a pile of dirty clothes were inside the basket.
This is going to be though…I said to myself….
EPISODE 3 & 4
I took the basket of clothes to the laundry room and set to work. When Tiffany noticed what was wondering wrong with me, she brought me a pad and taught me how to use it but not without insults. I found Madam Margret as someone who leaves somebody at another person’s mercy.
She doesn’t seem to talk to Tiffany and tell her to treat me with some respect too.
The family was greatly influential. I was taken to my new room by Tiffany’s brother who still had soft expression for me. “Isn’t this place too dark and stuffy?’, he asked me. ‘Not at all…can I sleep comfortably now I got to meet her father by weekend. He was a very gentle and nice man who worked outside the country. He accepted me as if he had known me all his life.
That night when I wanted to go and make her bed, Tiffany stared at me as she folded her arms.
‘You think because you are highly welcomed by my dad…you can do whatever you like?
Look…you are still under surveillance, okay? We don’t know where you come from or who you are although you told us about what happened to you but we can’t just believe you just like that’, she said to me. I merely looked at her and continued what I was doing.
“Nnena or whatever…am talking to you!”, Tiffany suddenly said again.
I looked at her, the question evident in my face. What else am I supposed to say?
‘I heard you when you stopped talking but what do you want me to say to you?’, I asked her. She waved me off. ‘Just get done with that and leave my room’, she responded, turning away.
I hurried up with what I was doing and left the room. I walked slowly to my own room at the back yard. It was situated at the end room of the backyard. I entered the room and turned on the switch. I flinched back as I saw Tiffany’s brother sitting on my bed and grinning at me.
‘Why are you so scared.. it’s me’, he said standing up. ‘But..but what do you want?
You should be in your room’, I stammered, feeling so uneasy. He walked to me and stood before me then put his arm on my shoulder. ‘I want us to be best of friends…I don’t seem to like the way my sister orders you around…for crying out loud you might even be older than her’, he said.
I did not get the say anything. I only bowed down my head.
When he left, I didn’t really thought about all he said. The next morning, my first bus stop was Tiffany’s room. Immediately I opened her door, a great odor of alcohol and cigarettes hit me like a thunderbolt. I gasped for air at the unbelievable smell.
Is Tiffany…? I covered my nose with my hand and entered further into the room. I heard her shower running. She was taking her bath. Her shelf was full with shades from cigarette stick.
On the foot of her bed was two bottles of champagne. I could not believe it. On her bed was her school uniform and at the foot of her bed was her sandal. I did not know what to do as I stood with the mop and bucket which I was carrying with me. I heard her talking on phone and went closer to listen. ‘Oh, come on Jude…you know well that my mum will get my teachers payed for my results….I can’t come and be wasting my precious time writing any stupid exams. Yes, I will stop by at your house for some refreshments’. I heard her say and then she cut the call, as she continued her shower. Jude must be her boyfriend. I thought to myself. What was the word turning into? Tiffany… smoking?? Her bathroom door opened and she came out tying a white towel. She looked a little shocked when she saw me. ‘I thought I closed…the door.
How did you get in?’, she asked me. ‘The door was open…so I came in to clean up your room’, I said calmly. She looked around her room and looked at me. ‘You want to try some of the cigarettes?’, she asked and laughed when she saw the look on my face. ‘We can only become friends…I will even allow mum get you a school only if you can keep this a secret and join me’, Tiffany said as I stared at her. ‘What do you mean by that?’ ,I asked innocently.
‘Then should I frame you up for you to understand?’, she asked me, looking wickedly at me.
I was amazed. How could a girl like Tiffany be able to do all these things?
Is she even human? ‘Don’t you dare me, Nnena. This was how I framed our last three maids when the saw me smoking and refused to keep it a secret. I know from the look of things, you don’t even have anywhere to go to. Don’t spoil your miserable life by yourself and just keep your tongue in cheek. No one will believe you..I will only frame you up.
So, choose wisely..my maid?’, she added the last one mockingly. We stood staring at each other and at that point, Madam Margret came inside the room….
Should I join her in order to become friends with her and live comfortably?
‘What is happening here?’, Madam Margret asked as she came in. I quickly grabbed my mopping stick, pretending to be so busy. “Oh, nothing mum… Nnena and I were only talking’, Tiffany said, looking at me. ‘Alright dear..I came to tell you to be fast for school or else you will go late again’, Madam Margret said and left. I could not believe she did not see the bottles or was she turning a blind eye to it? I decided I won’t meddle with Tiffany’s affairs or neither join her in her bad habit. As I came downstairs, going back to my own room, I heard loud voices belonging to Madam Margret and Mr Wilson, her husband. I went nearer as I sensed everything was not alright. ‘I dare you to put that girl in school, Wil’,I heard Madam Margret’s loud voice. I was a little bit perplexed. Which girl were they talking about? Me? “I don’t need your go ahead to do what I want, Mag…I am the man if this house and there is nothing you or anyone can do about it’, Mr Wilson’s voice was even higher than his wife. I was surprised his voice was this high compared to his gentle nature. But wait..what are they talking about? I listened again. ‘Wil, what actually made you even think of sending that stranger to school with Pur only daughter?!’,Madam Margret shouted. I stood at that spot, perplexed. Mr Wilson… thinking of sending me to school?
‘Listen, May…If you were in her shoes… wouldn’t you have liked to be sent to school?
With the story she told me about her family…I felt for her because when I was also little…I experienced similar thing! It was by the mercy of the merciful that I went to school and you were able to marry me!’, Mr Wilson said. Fast tears welled up in my eyes.
What a man. I would not want to get caught spying on the couples.
I turned to go as Madam Margret’s voice reached my ears again. ‘How will you do it?? Just how!
Look, let me tell you something…Nnena…or whatever doesn’t even know about school..what did you even see inside her!’, Madam Margret shouted again.
I closed my eyes in pain as I listened to Mr Wilson’s reply. ‘I see brilliance in her…a bright future. I see a child who badly needs support in life not like our own daughter who wants to get the teacher paid for her exams!’, Mr Wilson voiced out. I feared the next thing to come as I could not hear Madam Margret’s voice. ‘Are you now insulting our daughter because of that wrench!’, Madam Margret shouted. ‘Mag.. please, let this rest..I don’t want to make issues out of this…I’ve made my decision. Nne will join Fanny in school by next term’, Mr Wilson said.
As I turned around to leave, I came face to face Tiffany. I flinched at the evil look on her face.
She looked like a she devil as she stared at me. She must have heard everything too. ‘You think all that is being said in there is gonna come to real? Well, don’t jubilate yet….I will make you suffer till you quit. Types like you don’t attend our royal school.
We don’t ever bear your stupid local dirty name. My dad even praised you and insulted me because of you? Haa….enjoy it while it last, loser…I will make you see hell till you quit…till you run….I will make you see hell’. She was my age mate…yes, I was not supposed to be afraid by her threats but the look in her eyes…the sound in her voice… wasn’t coming from the girl standing before me. It was sounding like something from the queen of coast in hell..and I trembled like a leaf as I saw the rest if my life far away…like dark ciders….
EPISODE 5 & 6
‘Guess what, guys!! We have a new student among us and do you know where she comes from?
Well, I will tell you…she is from a cow’s dunk and being that am so so so kind hearted and nice…I decided to take her in as my maid… welcome, Nnena!’. I prayed the ground would open up and swallow me as Tiffany stood in front of the class, introducing me in such a manner. All eyes turned to look at me where I was sitting down at the third row in the second seat. I was wearing a mofti blue skirt and black top which was brought by Mr Wilson. Two days ago before I started schooling at St Jones Royal, he took me to the mall and brought me lot of things.
Immediately Mr Wilson left for work, Madam Margret had everything seized up except for few casual wears one of which I wore to school that very day which was my first day in the school.
As she introduced me that day most of the kids started laughing. ‘Oh, what a pretty good maid’. ‘I think we should call her maid Nnena!’. ‘Please, get your maid to change her name to something better…she is staining our reputation with such local name!’.
These were part of the comments that were being heard that day. I ignored them all. Instead, I brought out my bag and started listing my name on the new notes. ‘We are talking to you newbie…come out and introduce yourself to the class”, Tiffany said, as she came to my front, tapping my desk. I looked up at her and continued what I was doing. “Didn’t you hear me?”, Tiffany said, folding her arms. ‘Come on, Fannie….just let her be if she doesn’t want to introduce herself…if I were her, I wouldn’t even dare come out…not with the way you introduced me?’, a girl beside me who was my desk mate said. Tiffany turned her furry towards her.
‘Oh you shut up, Kim! Who was talking to a pumpkin like you?’, Tiffany asked mockingly. Kim looked at her and looked at away, waving her head. Tiffany looked at me as I stared back at her. ‘And as for you, better be warned. Am the cheerleader of this class’s club and am also the captain…I could get you grounded…so you better obey me or I will do what am supposed to do to punish a law breaker’, Tiffany said. I got tired of keeping quiet and looked at her, furiously.
I was about talking when her brother, Josh, came in to see the scene at the right time.
‘What are you doing, Tiffany? he asked, coming closer. Tiffany stood straight and turned towards him. “What does it look like am doing…am trying to be nice by letting her introduce herself to the class before lessons but she is pushing it away… isn’t she breaking the class rules?’, Tifanny asked, gesturing to her mates. Josh breathed in and looked at his sister. ‘Tiffany, will you please just go and sit down?’, he asked his expression deep Tiffany looked at her brother and let put an amused expression. ‘Wait, Josh…you can’t just come into my class and order me around that way…thus isn’t home’, Tiffany said, staring daggers at her brother. Josh looked at me and seemed to talk with me with his eyes because I could spell the look of apology in his face. Please, forgive her for the public disgrace. I looked away as my mind drifted to what happened between me and Josh last night.
I was taking my bath when suddenly he came into the bathroom ,dancing with headphones in his ears. Because of the headphones, he couldn’t here the shower running and thought no one was inside.
He came in and saw my full nakedness.
I quickly covered my fresh growing breasts so embarrassed.
He quickly explained, removing the headphones but did not quite leave on time.
He stared at me again before leaving the bathroom. Why on Earth did he stare like that…I never knew I had a great body of a model. We avoided each other till that morning and from that very day, things started to change between us. So, that morning, I stared at him as I remembered the way he stared. Even as the row between them continued right there in the class, I was looking at Josh and thinking about the way he stared.
There was something I read in one of the romantic novels I got to sneak into my room..I recalled it as love. Is this also happening to me just like it happened between Matt and Lizzie in the story.
God…I was still only 14 then but certainly… something was going on between us two recently…..
A teacher for our first lesson of the day came into the class and everything died down.
But occasionally, Tiffany and her friends always glanced at me. During break, I went out a snack which I could only afford. As I sat down at the cafeteria table to eat my snacks, a boy slides beside me. ‘Hi…guess you are new here’, he said even before I looked at his face.
I let my gaze meet his and smiled a little although uncomfortable.
‘Yes…’,I stammered. I stole a quick glance at him. He was dark and cute with afro Jerry curl.
He actually looked like a prince. ‘So, what’s your name?’, he asked, looking at me.
I was about to reply when footsteps were heard behind me. ‘Just take a look!
You are already flirting with Jonathan?’, Tifanny asked, coming with her friends.
‘What do you mean by that?’, I asked, confused because I was getting so impatient with her already. The boy who was Jonathan smiled as he looked at Tiffany.
‘Are you kidding me, Fannie? Just because we are so close doesn’t mean I can’t talk to other girls…come on, get a grip?’, Jonathan said, amused.
‘You can actually talk with any other girl but not with this thing!’, Tifanny said, referring to me. I closed my eyes in anger. What I badly wanted to do was slap her but I held down my anger.
‘Why would you call her a thing?’, Jonathan asked as he looked at me.
Before Tiffany could speak any more provoking word, I stood up and rushed out not listening to the rest of the conversation.
This was how I lived my life till the end of the term when it was time to bring our results
I did marvelously well and took the teacher’s best remark of the term.
Tiffany was disappointed by her teachers who were paid for her exams and she failed.
Mr Wilson was on fire the day he saw our results. ‘Have you seen it? Have you seen it or not! Tiffany is just falling ignorantly into your over protective wings. Just look at their results! Nnena just began schooling there and without the help of expo, she passed all her papers….have you seen it?’, Mr Wilson thundered before going upstairs. I was in my room, thinking about the harsh treatment I was going to receive from mother and daughter after Mr Wilson will go for work when Tiffany batched into my room in fury. ‘How dare you, Nnena? How just dare you trying to bring enemity between me and my dad!’, she screamed at me. This time, I had to defend myself.
I stood up, boldly facing her. ‘I am not bringing enemity to anybody, Tiffany.
It is not my fault that you did not make your father proud.
It is not my fault that you allowed someone else to make him proud’, I said.
Her eyes widened in pure anger. ‘What did you just say?’, she asked and almost immediately, a sound slap followed and landed badly on my left face. I gasped a sharp air at the pain i felt.
I looked sharply at her, holding my cheek. ‘I will tell you only one thing this night, Nnena.
You can enjoy all this while it last but bear it in mind that you won’t further your education here in my house…in my presence…you are going, Nnena.
Going back to the slums where you belong”, she said in a hard voice and looked at me, then stormed out. I found tears of anger…tears of determination streaming down my chubby cheeks as I sat back on my bed. What is life?
The next two years, I entered the next class which was ss2.
Luckily for me, Tiffany’s class was now different.
I happened to be in the same class now as Josh, Tiffany’s brother.
Within the few years, we’ve grown fond of each other. This further irritated Tiffany. She accused me of stealing her brother’s attention and taking away her father’s love. During second term in school ss2,Josh and i began dating secretly. I was no longer afraid of Madam Margret’s threat and her method of starving me after a hectic work in the because I now got all I needed from Josh, my first boyfriend. By now, I’ve grown into a full woman with every curves at the right places. By then, I knew what every teenager supposed to know. One afternoon, after returning from school, I sneaked into Josh’s room to eat the food he must have kept for me before doing my chores.
Josh was already back from school.
We did not get back together because I had to wait for extra lesson.
He was sitting on the bed, removing his school shirt when I came in, quietly.
‘Why so quiet?”, he asked, smiling at me.
‘Of course I have to be careful…I don’t want any one to see me here in your room…you know what that means, right? We will be busted and I will be kicked out of this house’, I said, bringing down my bag.
Josh smiled and pulled me closer and making me seat on his laps.
“I will never allow that to happen because I will never know how to do without you.
Do you know you are so beautiful?, he said and I smiled at him.
He brought his head closer and his lips met mine. That was the fourth time we would be kissing if am not losing count. We’ve promised each other to abstain from sex till the right time.
Josh and I were lost in our little romance forgetting we did not even lock the door.
He unbuttoned my shirt and pulled off my shirt.
The romance was getting hot when the door suddenly opened wide with no fore warnings and with no sound down the stairs.
I frozed in Josh’s arms. Am dead…dead for good…..
EPISODE 7 & 8
I thought I was going to be buried alife….for being caught in bed with Josh.
But it wasn’t so…… ‘Oh boy…what are you doing!’, an amused voice boomed out, as I quickly wore my shirt.
Standing at the door way was, Pius, Josh’s best friend. The race of my heart beat almost killed me. I was ashamed and relieved at the same time. I quickly got out of bed, dressed hurriedly and left the room gently as ever. I was unable to hear what was being said as I rushed to my room.
The next day was a Saturday and school free day and also a restless day for me.
I started with mopping the kitchen. I packed all the dirty dishes in to the sink and on the tap, while also putting up something for breakfast for the family.
I was arranging the cutleries in the rightful places when Tiffany entered the kitchen.
She was just waking up and still wearing her pajamas.
I pretended not to see her as she stood before me.
‘Nnena, look up…are you blind? Even if you can’t greet… can’t you at least show some manners?’, Tiffany asked, folding her arms.
‘I don’t seem to get what you are driving at…the best thing for you, I think it’s silence’, I said as Tiffany sneered at me. ‘Talk back a million times if you can.
I don’t need to stress myself on you again because your days in this house are limited.
I want you to go into my room now and pack out all the clothes in the basket for laundry’, she said as I looked at her.
‘Am still busy here in the kitchen with the dishes.
One step after another…I will do that when it’s time comes’, I said and continued doing what I was doing. Tiffany laughed amused. ‘Wait…have you suddenly gone nut?
Am telling you to go into my room and do something..And you are saying another thing.’ she asked with her voice raised so high.
I was about to talk when Josh cane in, interrupting us.
‘She told you she still has something doing here in the kitchen. If you are so impatient…why don’t you do it yourself?’ he asked, standing by the door. Tiffany looked at her brother straight in the eyes, daring him.
‘It is obvious that this witch has turned you against me.
You never meddled with the way I give orders then why her…why she!
What exactly is between you two that is making you see your only sister as an enemy!’, Tiffany shouted furiously. Josh only stared at her. ‘You keep misquoting me, Fannie but I don’t even care. All I know is that you should try giving people some space to breath, understood?’, Josh asked and looked at me before going out. I awaited her to vent her anger on me but she did nothing. She only looked at me with a revengeful look and left the kitchen. I breathed in some air of relief.
One more year later, I was out of secondary school. I was happy at the best marks on the report card. I collected my certificate with the help of Mr Wilson and felt so happy to know a kind make like him.. Although Tiffany passed, her result wasn’t as good as mine.
Josh was already processing for his higher education when it all happened.
Three nights after we passed out from school, Josh and I had sex and I broke my virginity.
At first, I was embarrassed and hurt but he reminded me of his love and promised never to leave me. He assured me nothing was wrong and I felt myself relaxing.
Then two months later, something terrible happened… something I will never forget in a jiffy.
I had heard them, both mother and daughter murmuring some words to each other as I went about my chores that particular day. I was also in a happy mood because it was weekend and Mr Wilson was coming back few hours from that time. Josh was yet to come back from his tutorials.
When it was something close to 3pm,I went into the kitchen to prepare an early dinner for Mr Wilson and Josh.
I was dishing out the meal when Mr Wilson’s car drove into the compound. I carried the tray of food and took it into the dining room. I placed it on the table and went back into the kitchen to get some drinks. I was coming out of the kitchen when I met Tiffany coming out too from the dinning. Her reaction was quite uneasy. She only stared at me and pushed passed me.
I looked back at her and stopped, feeling strange but I waved it off.
‘Welcome, sir!’,I greeted Mr Wilson as I collected his brief case.
He smiled at me and patted my shoulder. ‘Everywhere is smelling so yummy…what did you cook?’, Mr Wilson asked as he went into the sitting room. I was about to reply when his wife, Madam Margret came out to meet him. They hugged. ‘Welcome, darling’, she greeted as she stared at me and looked away. ‘What of the kids…my children?’ ,Mr Wilson asked.
‘Oh, Fannie is in her room and Josh is yet to he back from his tutorial’, Madam Margret answered.
Mr Wilson went into his room and had his bath. Then, came down for breakfast.
I was already in the dining, putting the food in order when he came in. He sat down as I put a load of salad in front of him.
He sipped a mouthful of the orange juice beside the food and grabbed his spoon.
Just as he digged it inside the food, Tiffany and her mother batched into the room.
Hold on,dad! Daddy, please don’t eat that!! The food is already poisoned!’, Tiffany shouted.
I felt my head swinging at what I heard. I could see my world collapsing and tumbling down like the walls of Jericho. Mr Wilson looked up at them.
‘What do you mean by that?’, he asked. ‘Please, Wilson stand up from there right now!
This witch in disguise has poisoned your food’, Madam Margret said.
I couldn’t talk. I did not even get myself because it seemed suddenly as if my brain has already been brainwashed.
“What…what are you guys talking about?’, I asked when I finally found my voice.
The look of ‘Tiffany, why?’ became evident in my eyes as I stared at Tiffany while the tears rushed up. I totally understood what was going on. I finally understood that my life has been set up for worst by mother and daughter. “What are you saying, Mag!
Nnena will never do such a thing!’, Mr Wilson fired hitly as he stood up.
‘Daddy, there is no need to shout…there is just only one way to find out’, Tiffany said as she stared at me with the look of ‘I told you your days in my house are limited.
Tiffany carried the food as we followed her to the back yard by the lower stairs. There, one of their dogs was laying down. Mr Wilson’s eyes had grown wide with anticipation.
Tiffany dropped the food on the ground in front of the dog and we all watched.
I was already crying in my heart. Who will I turn to? Where will I go to?
After the dog finished eating the salad, it went limp after two minutes.
It vomited blood and died instantly. Mr Wilson almost fell as he stared at the dead dog in shock.
He quietly looked at me through painful eyes.
‘Nnena…why?’, was all he could say. I could not even defend myself.
The tears only came down in a flow of a river. I really cried a river.
I was done for as I fell on my knees. What need was it to defend myself when the whole facade is to this extent. ‘You evil witch!
You want to kill my husband for me?
If he had listened to me, his wife…he wouldn’t have been in such a danger.
Get up there…pack your things and leave this house!’, Madam Margret shouted at me as she went inside. Mr Wilson turned around and walked slowly back into the building.
Tiffany stood looking at me, smiling like a winner.
‘Get ready to leave… loser’, she said to me and walked out of my presence.
My only regret was that I was not going to see Josh before I leave the house.
As I packed my things that day, the only place I had in my to go and stay was the orphanage home.
I never knew about it before but now I know.
I went very far away from the town and boarded a bus to another part of the country entirely.
My only joy was my school certificate with the best marks in it.
I finally found an orphanage home to stay although I know I will only suffer.
The Rev. Sisters accepted me.
By then, I was heading to the age of 18.
I had to sleep in a hall where different insects toyed around with.
It was that very night I began having the symptoms.
I didn’t want to believe it but that very night….I found out I was already three months pregnant……
I thought of what to do about it.
Would they even allow me to continue staying in the orphanage?
I knew the only person I’ve opened myself to was Josh and Josh alone. He was responsible for my pregnancy. I thought of going back to the house to make the pregnancy known but thinking about the way they framed me up,I was scared fir my life and my unborn child. The only option I had was to beg for shelter in the orphanage.
Two weeks later, the Rev.sister in charge of our room found put I was pregnant. We were eight girls in the room and only one of them whose name was Stella always talked to me.
Others were just like Tiffany, claiming seniors and first comers. Sister Eunice, took me to the head sister’s office as soon as she found out about my pregnancy. After telling her about it, the head sister’s looked at me. ‘You were pregnant before you came here?’, she asked me. I nodded as she breathed in. ‘Firstly, you will have to visit the clinic, then we will put you into a great care until you give birth’, she said. I was immediately relieved. At least, I wasn’t going to leave.
Three months later, my belly became fully round with a baby kicking inside me. My body changed, even my colour changed to something different entirely. Stella became a big help to me for most time, I was always weak to do anything by myself. I cried all night for God’s intervention, the way the sisters told us to do. I became strong in prayer.
Three months later, I went into labour. Being my first, it was so hard I thought I would never survive it. I was rushed to the clinic in the company of Sister Eunice, Stella and another sister.
Sister Benita was in charge of delivering the baby for me. I screamed and screamed.
It was like I was going through hell. They layed me on the bed and even had to force me because I grew stubborn at a time. ‘Please, Nnena! Endure this…you will pass through this!’, Stella pleaded with me as I went in pain. ‘No, Stella…I don’t think I can endure this!
Am going to die of pain, please help me or just kill me!
Sister Eunice, please help me!’, I cried. Stella and Sister Eunice held down my hand and stuffed my mouth with a piece of clean clothes while they forcefully patted my legs, using wrappers to cover me. I refused to push when Sister Benita ordered me to push.
I only cried the more till everyone got tired of me. ‘Nnena.. do you really want to end your life like this?
Do you know what this baby is going to become? Look, Nnena…your future is bright…brighter than the sky up there. You will overcome all pains…. just please, do as I say and push.
Nnena…please push’, Sister Benita said gently to me. The passion in her voice drove some strength into me. I closed my eyes shut and gave my first push with a cry. ‘Yes,Nnena! You are making it! Your are getting there… push!!’, sister Benita shouted again. Her words gave me a large sense if comfort as I pushed again, this time.. Harder. Stella continued patting my hand, encouraging me like never before. I gave my third push a long and hard one and as I stopped to breath in,i felt something drop out of me and the cry of a baby circulated the whole room.
I was bleeding so badly that I myself, I thought I would die. I breathed in heavily, thinking everything was over. ‘You made it! You made it,Nnena! Its a baby girl!’, Stella shouted as I smiled tiredly and collapsed on to the bed when Sister Benita shouted.
‘No! It’s not over yet…there is still one more coming…..
EPISODE 9 & 10
I pushed again. This time , the second one came out more easily. I could not believe I was going to be having twins. An hour later, I was moved to another room while my new babies were being attended to by Stella and sister Eunice. Everyone was perplexed as they were all looking at my twin girls. At my age, it was a miracle that I had them without complications and Operation.
I was also confused. What will I offer these beautiful kids in such an environment with such situations? I was dazed. Should I return to Josh and tell him about this?
He promised me nothing was wrong. He promised me he loved me….why not go back to him?
But no. What if he also believed his mother and sister for their frame up?
I began to cry endlessly. I cried till my twins were brought to me. Stella carried one of them while sister Benita carried the other one. They looked at me as I cried. ‘With this lovely children God has given you…why are you crying?’, sister Benita asked. I looked at the tiny babies which has been layed in my both side on the bed. I looked at Sister Eunice. ‘What do I offer them in this place, sister? Just what? In such an environment…how do you expect me to be happy I gave birth…not even one, but two! I’ve sinned heavily against these kids by bringing them into this painful world. What do I do?’, I cried. Stella’s eyes were also filled with tears as they stared at me.
Two days later, I named the girls July and Janet. It was really a hard time for me as I had to work every day and also take care of the kids. I told sister Eunice I wanted to leave the orphanage home and she told me the head sister would never allow it until the kids come of age. I wanted to go out there and do everything in my power to survive with my kids. I had no option but to stay.
Sister Benita always cheeked up on the twins every one week for tests to ensure they were healthy. One night after the day’s work and after I have breastfed the twins and put them to sleep, Stella engaged me in a discussion. ‘Those girls are very identical…I hope you can now differentiate them very well. Even though they look alike, I think Jane will be more sharper than July’, Stella said as she yawned. I only smiled.
“I think that’s true but I only hope they don’t suffer like me in the nearest future’, I said as Stella looked at me.
‘Stop thinking that way, Nnena.
Tomorrow is a brighter and another day.. that is what I’ve learnt from this orphanage.
Don’t loose hope’, Stella told me.
‘But we can’t stay here forever…we have to go out there and work!’, I said bluntly.
‘You are right on that one but the age limit here is long.
We still have some years to decide whether we leave or stay…by then,I pray we get someone who will adopt or marry us’, Stella said and I looked amazed at her.
I only laughed.
What a nice day dreaming.
Where does that ever happen?
Four years later, July and Janet had started talking, walking and doing things children could do.
My daughters were the most beautiful and sharp.
But everyday, I cry.
They looked skinny and always go hungry due to lack of proper care.
I had to depend on the sisters of the orphanage home.
I was already planning to run away from the orphanage in order to get something doing to cater for my kids before they die of hunger.
Another mind told me to run back to my original home but remembering the things I went through in that house and what my father trued to do, I killed a thought of going there empty handed.
If I have to go there, I promised myself I would go in my own car.
Three weeks after their fourth birthday, I was in our room, combing July and Jane’s hair after they returned from the orphanage school when Jane complained of hunger.
‘Mummy…am hungry…we did not even eat much last night and our aunty said there is nothing to eat till evening’, she said as I lowered the comb, heartbroken.
What do I do?
I was old enough by then…I have to take action.
Just as I was still thinking of what to do, Stella came in informing me that the head
sister was calling me in her office.
I felt somehow because it was strange for her to call me.
She hasn’t spoken to me that much since I’ve given birth.
When I got to her office, she was sitting down on her chair.
I greeted her and she asked me to sit down.
I sat down, as I listened to what she was about to say.
‘Nnena..you have to listen good to what am about to say’, she started as I listened attentively.
She came forward on her chair.
‘Dont look at me as someone who doesn’t have a conscience because I don’t have a kid of my own. Having those twins with you is only a burden to you…Nnena, you have to be wise even though it’s going to be risky on you.
You have to take the risk’, she said quietly to me.
I looked at her, confused.
“What are you try… trying to say?’, I asked her.
‘An influential couple arrived this afternoon. They want a little girl for adoption who is very healthy and brave with the complete wisdom of a human being.
Nnena, this is an opportunity to make something out of life.
Instead of allowing those kids to suffer with you…Nnena…give one of them out for adoption….
I stared at the head sister, dumbfounded. She looked at me and held my left hand. ‘You heard me, Nnena…you have to do something. I know it will hurt you to leave your child but you’ve gotten no choice at this stagw in time. Just dee this an opportunity to give them a better life. They can’t continue suffering with you. Those kids are too beautiful and I don’t want them to continue staying here. Other kids even before them has been given out for adoption’,the head sister said. My eyes filled with tears as I looked at her. ‘That is because they don’t have parents! They are motherless and fatherless but am here for my children’,I told her. ‘You are here for them with nothing?? God,Nnena… wisen up. You have to do something about your plight. If you go out there, you will only suffer with one one to help’,the head sister said as tears rushed down my face.
What type of life is this? ‘I…I can’t do that’, I said through tears. The head sister breathed in and balanced back on her chair. ‘I will give you some time to think about it…you can go now’,the head sister said. I slowly and quietly got up and left the office.
I went back to our room and found July and Jane sleeping on their bed. Sleep of hunger. Such beautiful children were supposed to be in a comfortable place with complete family. I could not be sure if Josh was already married but I knew someday, somehow, he will get to meet his kids. I could have taken them back to him but something kept pulling me down from doing do.
I sat beside them, looking at them and at the same time crying. Am I ever capable of letting any of you go? I asked myself as I watched them sleep. Just then, Stella entered and quickly came to meet me. ‘So… what did she say…how did it go?’, she asked. I looked up at her and waved my head. ‘She wants me to give up one of the twins for adoption’, I said and another round of tears came out of my eyes. Stella kept quiet, looking at me. ‘They are just 4, Stella. If I give one up for adoption…in the nearest future…she won’t know me again and I might end up loosing her… Stella, what do I do?’, I cried. Stella sat down beside me. ‘But I thought you said they have a father..and you know him very well. Even though you said you don’t want them to see you…is there no way you can try to link the children up with the father…and the family… even though if it’s one of the twins?’, Stella asked me.
My face became clear as I looked at her. “What are you trying to say?’,I asked her. Stella breathed in. “We have to find a way…we have get a plan…this can’t continue’, Stella said to me.
I stared at her as my mind drifted into thinking. What exactly do I do? My mind drifted to Josh and Tiffany. Where would they be now? Tiffany would he probably married now, perhaps, with kids.
The thought of thinking about Josh with another woman and kids of his own burned down my heart. ‘Nnena,we don’t need all this now…what we need exactly now is plan. Tell me where exactly you once lived with this guy and his family’, Stella said to me and I told her.
There was silence between us for some time when Stella looked at me, expecting me to say something. “I have a plan but I doubt it will work’, I said suddenly. ‘Please, say it…it might just work”, Stella persuaded and I breathed in. “I don’t… don’t know if there is a way you can meet with Josh…I mean…a way you guys can be together…’,I stopped talking, scratching my hair in annoyance. ‘Let me just keep quiet..it won’t work’, I said. ‘Ofcourse it will… that is if Josh hasn’t gotten married yet. The only thing I need to do is escape from the orphanage today without any notice. Let me go and try my luck’,Stella said. I looked at her.
Although, four years of friendship has deepened our care and closeness for each other, I still needed her to assure me she will never abandon and betray me. “Promise me you will always keep me updated and never abandon me’, I said to her. Stella looked bewildered at me.
“Do you ever think I will do such a thing? Nnena…you might not know but you have long become the family I never had. Never worry, everything will work out’, Stella said to me. “What if he is already married?’, I asked her.
“I will get the information first when I get there to know how to present myself. If he is married…then I will have to pretend as someone who is looking for an housemaid job’, Stella said and I nodded, as I breathed in deeply. “So after getting closer to them…what do we do next?’, Stella asked. “Let’s get that done first.
I need to gain some time from the head sister too then after that…I will tell you what next…when the time is right. But please, Stella… promise you won’t betray me…
EPISODE 11 & 12
I had this urge to help Nnena. She was someone who has a good heart and I bear her suffering like my own. I had my own problems but I wanted to solve her own problems first. That day, I left the orphanage for the street here Nnena once lived with Josh and his family. I had trouble in locating the house. From the description Nnena gave me, I found the house close to something in the late evening. I knocked at the large gate and a young man opened it. It was the gate man. I greeted him ever so politely. ‘Yes?…what do you want?’, he asked me. I peeped into the compound and saw how large the house was. “Please…does one Josh live here?”,I asked hoping to hear nothing but yes. “Yes, but Josh has his own house now outside town. His parents and his sister lives here’, the gate man said. “Please…do you have any information where he lives?”,I asked again. The man looked at me. “Before I answer you…who are you first?’, he asked me. I quickly thought about a good lie. “Oh…me? Umm… well, we are old school mates back then and I wanted to tell him something very important”, I said, in a pleading manner. “Okay…Oga’s son lives at Cape town but I don’t know the street exactly…why not go
inside and greet his family?’, the gate man asked me.
I thought for a while and decided to go. I walked straight to the main building and quiet entered the hall. I stopped when I heard a lady weeping and talking. “Mum…am tired…..I can’t seem to have a child of my pen. This is the third year of my marriage with Nathan but I haven’t conceived. Mum…Nathan is becoming impatient. I had to come and stay here for sometime because Nathan seem to give me a silent treatment….I don’t know what’s happening to me, mum…what do I do to get pregnant!’, the lady cried. I stopped, listening. That must be the Tiffany Nnena told me. It was amazing to me. Here was a lady living comfortably in a duplex that could not give birth but there was Nnena in a orphanage home who gave birth to twins. I breathed in as I heard a woman’s voice. I knew it must be Madam Margret. “Tiffany, am bothered by this also but I think there is always a way out. Since we’ve gone to the hospital and they say your womb has some complications…I think we have to use another method. I know Nathan loves you and would never want to leave you alone, right?’, the woman asked. “Yes, mum..I use to believe that before but now…am bothered’, Tiffany answered with shaky voice. “I should not have done that abortion two years ago. Now, it’s affecting me……I should have had
that baby then…but I thought it would affect me from getting married. Josh has been affected by the whole thing…he has refused to get married…saying we have taken away his love and will ever remain single. I don’t know what we are going to do. Our family seems to be going down the drain’, Tiffany said. There was silence for sometime before the woman talked again. “I have an idea…if Nathan will also agree to it’, the woman said. “What’s it…mum?’, Tiffany asked eagerly. “Let’s go for an adoption’, she finally dropped the bombshell. I stood at that corner line someone electrocuted. The word adoption seems to answer it all! Tiffany was silent again as she eagerly said to her mother. “I think you are right mum…but…but where do we get a baby for an adoption?’, Tiffany asked. By then,I was preparing to come out and make my presence known. “I don’t know….’,she was saying when I came out into full view and announced. “I have a baby for adoption…..
…. continuation from Stella’s POV.
They both turned sharply to stare at me. Tiffany stood up immediately. “Who are you?’,she asked as I came closer. I thought desperately about what to tell them. “The thing is that I’ve come all the way here to help your situation’, I said, deciding I won’t tell them I wanted to meet with Josh. Mother and daughter stared at each other and looked back at me. “You said you have a baby for adoption… whose child is it? And how do you know us?’, Tiffany asked. “The child is from motherless babies home and
someone who I must not mention the name directed me here’, I answered, forming the lies
as quickly as possible.
Tiffany came closer to me. “Like…I…I need that baby urgently….how old is the baby…a boy or a girl?’, Tiffany asked. “She’s 4 and she’s a beautiful baby girl’,bI answered. “How do we get the baby?’, Tifanny asked.
How desperate she is. “Give me your number…I will arrange a meeting place and bring the child to you…she has a mother…so,I don’t want her to see her child being taken away’, I said and stopped, amazed at myself. Am I ever going to do that? Of course not… that will be betraying Nnena. Tiffany’s face lit up with a smile. “Can you really do that for me!’, she asked me. “I just want to help…’,I said as they looked at me. “How can you make us to trust your words?’ ,Madam Margret said. “Just let me have your number. By next week, you will have the baby in your hands’. I left the building and walked to the gate man to have a conversation with him. “Are you sure you don’t know where Josh lives?’, I asked the gate man. The man looked thoughtfully for a moment and looked at me.
“I know where he lives but I don’t know if the name of the street he lives in’, the gate man said. There was still hope. “Can you at least describe the way and how the house looks like?’, I asked him and he nodded. I smiled to myself. The time was already far spent so I begged the gate man to allow me stay in for the night after he gave me the direction to Josh’s house. He agreed and the next day, I left for Cape
Town. Following the directions, I searched the big houses in Cape and finally, towards afternoon, I located the house. It was a beautiful one. How could Nnena’s lover be in this kind of house while she suffers with her children at the orphanage? Does it make any sense? As I saw the house, something else began to creep inside of me. I long to be in that house, feeling it’s warmth and it’s coziness. But still yet, I doubted the owner of the house was Josh. If Josh really was the owner, am yet to decide what to do. I started thinking of a way to get him to know me. I sat under a shade in the cool city and brought myself a drink out of the little money with me, while trying earnestly of what to do when, suddenly a wonderful but risky idea struck me. I looked up hopefully at the new idea bubbling up in my head. Yes, I know exactly what to do. Surely someone who has such a big house must have a car, isn’t it? I waited till evening. Waiting for the time he will drive out if the house. I was sure he was around because I caught a
glimpse of a young man upstairs with a drink in his hand. Doesn’t he ever go out? The time was running late and I had to be fast in order to see where you lay my head for the night. I pictured the street and found out the way to the main road and waited patiently around the corner, keeping my eyes on the gates.
Around 6 to 7, my prayers were answered as the gates swung open and a blue dark Jeep drove out and cornered to my direction. I breathed in heavily at what I was about to do for it was of a great risk but I had to do it. As the car pulled into gear, driving fast enough towards my direction, I closed my eyes and ran into the road. I screamed and before he could apply his break, he had hit me in front of my laps. I screamed and dropped to the floor in pain and as I heard the car door, opening, I closed my eyes shut and purposely fainted. He took me to the hospital and had me admitted. After I felt enough treatment had been done on, I finally woke up the next day. The driver was sitting on a chair in my room. From the description the gate man gave me, I quickly knew it was Josh. “What am I doing here?’,I asked him. He smiled thankfully, probably because I have woken up.
“Thank God you are okay…but how did you just run into the road like that?
Did you want to kill me?’, he asked me. Instead of answering, I began to cry so pitifully
that he offered me his hanky. “Am so sorry…I had no where to go’, I cried. He looked at me and cane closer. “How come….where do you live and where do you come from? Who are you?’, he asked me.
I looked into his eyes and found him so rich and attractive. Who wouldn’t want to be with such guy?
Wasn’t this the right time to tell him about his Nnena and his twin girls? Wasn’t this the right time to tell him he had a family somewhere? Wasn’t this the right time to tell him how much they were suffering? But no….I didn’t, instead…I began to think of a way to live happily and forever with this guy…. forgetting that there was Nnena waiting somewhere….
EPISODE 13 & 14
…. Continuation from Stella’s POV.
He took me to his house and I felt so happy to step inside that beautiful house. I sat down at one of the large sofas looking around and enjoying the cozy atmosphere of the house. “Enjoy yourself and make yourself at home”, Josh said and left for the kitchen. He came back carrying a tray with a glass of juice on it. “Your house is beautiful’, I said, smiling as he handed me the juice. He smiled. “Thanks but my house still remains incomplete even though it’s beautiful’, he said as I looked at him. I understood his statement but instead I just ignored it and sipped my juice. Just then, the door opened and Tiffany came in. She came into the sitting room and saw me. Her eyes widened in amazement. “You?…how did you…?’,she asked.
“You know her?’, Josh asked as he stared at us. “Yes…she was at our house yesterday’, Tiffany said. “I never knew you guys know each other…am sorry for intruding…I will be on my way now’, I said and stood up, getting ready to go when they stopped me. “No…you can’t just leave like that.
I had like to have that baby gurl you talked about. I really need her urgently’, Tiffany said as I looked at her. Nnena would surely leave one of the twins for me if am able to tell her the lies I’ve cooked inside me. “Okay then, by morning you will get her. I will go back to the orphanage tonight and take her then tomorrow, I will bring her to your house’.
…… NNENA’S POV.
Stella returned the following night. I was anxious to what she was about to say. Jane and July were already asleep on their bed as I sat with Stella. “So, how did it go?
Did you see Josh?’, I asked eagerly as Stella nodded. “I saw him but am sorry, Nnena…I told him
about you and the twins’, Stella said as my heart beat fast.
“What did you say? You told him about me….what did he say?”,I asked slowly while Stella shook her head. “He was so angry. He told me you were the person who wanted to kill his father. He said if he knew your house…he would have come with the police to arrest you. He said if he sets eyes on you that he is going to strangle you. He pleaded with me to take him to where you were but you know I can’t do that’, Stella said and that brought so much heart break to me.
How could Josh believe in such facade? “When I told him about your daughters, he said I should bring his children to him but I told him you will never agree to let go of the twins. So,he told me to bring one to him at least, he should also have a child with him since he does have one. And his wife complied too because she also needs a child.
Nnena, this is not the time to weep. It’s time to lift some burdens off your shoulders”, Stella said as I wept. I looked towards my children’s bed and stared at them as they layed down in each other’s
arms. Just which one do i let go? I stood up and went closer to them, staring down at them. Stella followed me and stood beside me. “Stella, which one you suggest I let go?’, I asked her. “Who you need now is someone sharp and strong and Jane is…so I think you should send July”, Stella said and I stared at her. Wasn’t it too much of me to trust her just like this? But Stella and I have known each other so well and she also promised never to betray me, didn’t she? I wept as I looked back at the twins. “Tommorow morning, very early, you are leaving with her but before that, there is something I need to get’, I said. Before laying down for the night, I got two identical medallion from the cathedral. Inside it was the orphanage name and logo. I kept it down, sorrowfully waiting for morning to come.
Early at dawn, Stella woke up and got ready while I packed July’s few clothes. I woke her up quietly in order not to wake Jane too. July was startled I woke her up at such time. “Mummy.. what’s wrong?’, July asked in her small voice. I tried to hide my tears but I just couldn’t and my shaky voice also gave me away. “July, listen to what am about to say, okay? You are going somewhere with aunty Stella for some time, okay? There is some one you have to meet…you won’t stay with me and Jane for the main time now’, I said and July instantly began to cry. “No mummy….I don’t want to go…I don’t want to leave my sister behind’, July said and I cried the more but tried to control myself.
“Never worry, dear…honey…you don’t have to worry…we will come very soon to see you”, I said and wore her one of the medal. “Don’t you ever allow anyone take this away from you okay? So, with it, you can always remember me and your sister for as long as your memory can carry you, okay?”,I told her gently and hugged her.
All the while, I bathed her, she cried but after assuring her we would come and visit she
stopped crying. “Please, ensure she is in safe hands before you come back’, I told Stella as they got ready to go. Soon, they left. I cried as I sat on my mat. I sat motionlessly there till day break. Jane stood up and when she could not find Jane, she came to meet me. “Mummy…where is July?’, She asked looking
around. I drew her into my arms and told her what happened. She looked sharply at me and disengaged herself from me. “What do you mean, mummy? I want my sister! Where did she go to? Please, I want to be with my sister…get me my sister!’, Jane cried. I tried to pet and console her but she was inconsolable. Few hours that followed, she refused to neither eat anything nor talk. She refused to play with her mates or go anywhere. She refused to answer me no matter how I call her. Towards evening, I never knew what happened to my Jane. Her temperature grew very hot and went out of control. Before I knew what was going on, she fainted and went into a deep coma…
… STELLA’S POV.
I was glad with the progress I made and the trick I played on Nnena. I longed to be inside that mansion. We got to Madam Margret’s house around noon. I looked at July who was putting on a sad face as we entered the compound. “Don’t you like this beautiful house? Why are you looking so sad?’, I asked her. She looked up at me, sniffing. “I…I like it… it’s beautiful but I just want to stay with my mummy and my sister”, she said in a sad small voice. nI looked at her ,already getting annoyed. “Look, forget about your poor mummy who can’t give you anything. From now on, you are going to have a rich mummy who will buy all things for you. Beautiful clothes, beautiful toys and shoes! You will even put on fine hair and have alot of things and also go to a good fine school. Don’t you want all that?’, I asked her, raising my voice. July was already scared with the way I shouted. She just nodded while she continued sulking. “Good..now let me take you inside to your new mummy”, I told her and dragged her inside. Tiffany stood up immediately we entered. “You are here’, she said, staring at July.
I looked away from her and stared down at July then pushed her a little forward. “This is the child I told you about. I had Soo much difficulty in bringing her. So, take care of her” ,I said. July looked at Tiffany and looked away. I was angered by this. “Can’t you greet and introduce yourself?’, I asked her. July looked up at me. “While my mummy bathed me….she secretly told me am coming here to meet my father…and not a new mummy’, July said bluntly. That pissed me off and threw me off guard as Tiffany stared at me questioningly but I took control of the situation immediately. “The truth is that your mummy tricked you. She has given you up for a new mummy’, I told her. July looked at Tiffany and continued sulking. Tiffany came forward and bent before her, touching her hair. “Look honey…you won’t have to suffer again. You are also gonna have a father, okay? Soon, we will go to our own house because here is grandma’s home. You are gonna really love it,okay? it’s pretty good here with everything you need”, Tiffany said and hugged July while staring up at me. “You have to take her to your matrimonial home as soon as possible and stay there for some time. Don’t bring her here for sometime’, I said.
Tiffany dressed and took July out to quickly shop for her things. she brought so many clothes for her and different shoes. She got her baby dolls and designs for her new room. She also brought a lot of things for me too. Ranging from bags to clothes. From clothes to shoes.
I felt on top of the word, telling myself I was already a rich lady. As we came out of the mall, something came into my mind. “Why not tell your mother to relocate?’, I asked Tiffany as she stopped and looked at me. “Why?’ ,she asked. “Because of security reasons…you know for your new child’, I said. Tiffany thought for a while. “But you asked me to keep her away from the house for a while already’, she said. “Yes I did but still yet, I think she should relocate”, I said.
“Okay’, Tiffany said and breathed in. “And thanks Soo much for all the gifts”, I thanked her and she smiled. “You’ve thanked me enough already”, she said and carried July up and found out that her temperature was getting quite hot.
“Oh my…baby girl..what’s wrong with you. You are running a temperature. Don’t worry, okay…you are going to meet daddy soon. It’s time for you to meet your daddy, dear…hmm?’, she told her and July nodded. “So, what would you like to name her?”,I asked, smiling too. Tiffany looked at me and thought for a while. “I’ve always love the name, Miranda…so, I will name her Miranda’, Tiffany said and we both laughed together.
I left with my gifts, leaving Jane with Tiffany and went straight to Josh’s house. He seemed surprised to see me and that made me uncomfortable. “Hi…you came here again?’, he asked me, opening the door. I came in and sat down on the seat he offered me. “Are you surprised to see me here.. Like you don’t want me to visit?’, I asked him. “Of course not.
Am just surprised you still come here today”, he said and I found it confusing.
“I told you I had no where to go….I don’t know what to do”,I said, weeping. Josh stared at me, trying to say something. “But…but….I don’t think you can kind of stay here…’,he said and I looked up sharply at him. What is he trying to say? I fell on my knees and started pleading.
…. NNENA’S POV.
“What were you thinking, Nnena!! How could you separate the twins!!’,sister Eunice shouted at me as we rushed Jane to the clinic. Her temperature was still very hot but she was out of her deep coma. I’ve cried my heart out as I sat beside Jane on bed. “How could you have trusted Stella to that point?. Now, she’s not even back!. What were you thinking for Christ sake?’, sister Eunice shouted. “But…the head sister was going to separate them anyway to someone I don’t know so I thought it was better I send her to her father…I never knew it was going to affect Jane”, I cried, looking at Jane who was sleeping. “Look, I already told head sister Lizzie she can’t separate such twins. They are too identical to be separated. What made you think she hasn’t call on you since then? Nnena…you should have sought for counseling first’, Sister Eunice said gently and breathed in. “You told me before that you know where they live, right?’,she asked and I looked at her. “Yes but…but don’t tell me am supposed to go there?’, I asked, frightened. “Nnena, don’t you get it! Do you want Jane to die?… we’ve got to go out there now and bring back July if you don’t want Jane to give up the ghost here. Can’t you spell the hand writing on the wall? No matter what happens there today or the consequences…we are going there. Minus that, Jane will never be able to get herself again. Get prepared and let’s go bring back her sister….
EPISODE 15 & 16
How could Stella do this to me? I couldn’t believe she actually betrayed me meaning all the things she told me were nothing but lies. Right then, I couldn’t think of anything. One daughter was in danger and another was dying on bed. I had to save them first before thinking about the bastard. Miraculously, Jane woke up and said she wanted to follow us and bring back her sister. The next day, we prepared to go. She suddenly grew healthy. Sister Eunice collected a letter of permission and after we got ready, we hit the road.
….. STELLA’S POV.
I got Tiffany to convince Josh to let me stay in his house. I knew it sounded silly, but it just had to work. The next day, he started warming up to me and told me I could stay with him.
I prepared his breakfast happily.
Finally, my plans were working. Towards afternoon, Tifanny arrived with Jane.
I could not even recognize the little girl anymore. She looked like a princess from fairytale land.
I welcomed them as we sat in the living room. “Wow… she’s looking so adorable’, I said smiling at Jane who was sitting on Tiffany’s laps. She was also holding a big pink teddy bear.
Tiffany looked lovingly at her, touching her long braided hair. “She’s our joy now…my husband loves her so much and she will ever remain our child’, Tiffany said happily.
“So…how is Josh…ate you getting closer to him?’, Tiffany said and I smiled shyly.
“Sort of….am trying”, I said. “Look, I want you to marry my brother okay? As in…you have been an helper to us’, Tiffany told me, smiling. I smiled back. “It’s nothing but am willing to do what you said’,I replied. Tiffany nodded and looked down at Jane. “Miranda, what’s wrong?’, she asked her and touched her temperature. “Oh my God ,again? Why are you always running into temperature?’, Tiffany asked and looked at me. “I had to take her to our family doctor in the night…she ran into a very hot temperature last night and I was so afraid’, Tiffany said while I find something to say. “Well…you know she is kind of adapting to her new environment.
Don’t worry, she will get used to you guys and stop the temperature”, I assured her as she nodded. “I think I have to take her to my mum’s house so she can call our family doctor…we won’t be long.
Our family doctor doesn’t know my house or here and I have to get Miranda examined, so we have to go there. We won’t stay long’, Tiffany said when she saw the look in my eyes.
“We won’t stay long?”,I asked again. “Yes, we won’t stay long”. I dressed up and we went out.
… NNENA’S POV.
When we finally arrived the street after searching for it like never before,it has changed alot.
Everywhere looks so confusing as many things had changed but I still cracked my brain and got the main Street. I remembered vividly the day I left the street, almost five years ago now.
I was backing July as we walked.
As we entered further into the street, I started to get confused. The house i once lived in seemed to have disappeared among all other houses. “Can’t you figure it out anymore?”,sister Eunice said, sweating? I could not answer her. I stood at a spot, trying to gather my thoughts. But it was just four years ago? How come I couldn’t locate the house again? Another house was standing on the place Josh’s house was supposed to be. Sister Eunice took July from me and carried her.
Then a way to locate it came into my mind. Back then, when we were still schooling, Josh and I had a particular route we followed everyday. I looked at sister Eunice. “Let’s go back to the first entry where my school is located…I know how to locate it now. We went back and I saw my school. We took the left turn and walked through a narrow place and cane out of the opening.
We took another turn again through a narrow part and came out of the same street then I looked to my right at the far end and smiled as I saw the house. It had been repainted, that was why I couldn’t recognize it quickly. “That’s the house, Sister Eunice. Yes, am very sure of it I said.
Just then, a car drove out from the corner and as the gates were being opened, it rolled into the compound and we started moving fast , towards the house.
It was time to get the bastard busted..
Before we got to the house, the gate had already been closed.
So, we had to knock. I was expecting to see the formal gate man but he wasn’t the one. As we knocked, he came out to meet us. He looked at us questioningly. “Yes? What do you want!’, he asked. “Good day sir….will you kindly allow us enter the house?
We have to meet with the owner of this house”, sister Eunice said.
“And why would you want to meet with her?
Tell me, so I can relay your message”, the gate man said.
“Mr Man, we can’t tell you anything. We simply have to meet with Madam Margret now”, sister Eunice said, boiling up with anger. She forced her way in and dragged me inside the compound too
The gate man furiously stopped us from entering into the main building.
“You can’t just go in like that!
You are trying to be a trespasser…and we will call the police on you”, the gate man raved. I was getting scared. “Sister Eunice…please let’s get out of here…I don’t want trouble”,I said.
Sister Eunice stared at me as if I was from another planet. “Are you crazy?..no, tell me. Are you alright? Do you know what you are talking? You are talking nonsense. This girl’s life is on the line and all you can do is stay there and get scared, shaking like a jelly fish”, sister Eunice said, Soo angry. I’ve never seen her that angry before.
….. STELLA’S POV.
I heard the commotion out the compound first because I was bringing down juice from the kitchen upstairs. I quickly looked down the window in the kitchen. I almost had an heart attack as I saw them down stairs with the gate man. I thought desperately of what to do but there was no possible solution. How could I back down so easily? I asked myself. I dropped down the juice and tiptoed to the back stairs leading to the back yard downstairs before getting to the gate.
I had to notify the gate man never to let them in until I get a chance. But it wasn’t possible to call him without being seen. I told myself I was already doomed as I saw them, walking toward the main building with the gate man.
… NNENA’S POV.
Finally,we were able to convince the gate man when he saw July.
We decided sister Eunice should wait outside with July while I go into the house. As I stepped in, their laughter filled the air and drifted into my ears. I walked through the hall way and came out into the first sitting room. Tiffany’s etes widened as she saw me. Madam Margret stood up, looking at me with an heavy expression. “You?…what the hell did you come here to do?’,Madam Margret asked. I said nothing. I stood looking at them. I looked around. Jane wasn’t in sight.
“You heartless human….how could you? How could you do this to me!”,I shouted at them. Tiffany suddenly started laughing. “What are you saying now?
Four years ago, you never tried to defend yourself or deny what we did against you but here you are now trying to play innocent? You don’t even need it because even my father, whom you stole his love away from me is no longer here with us.
He has left us to another country entirely when he found out what we’ve done to you.
Do, just get out of here”, Tiffany said as I came further into the sitting room.
“Do you really think am here for that stupid thing you guys did?
No, of courses not. Am here to collect what actually belongs to me”, I said as they both looked at each other. “What the hell are you talking about?
What belongs to you here in my house?”, Madam Margret fired at me.
There question threw me off guard. I began to think if Stella even brought Jane to the house at all. “Where is Josh?’, I asked.
“And why are you asking of my brother?
He is now a rich guy with a woman of his own. Don’t you even dare to do anything stupid or I will just get rid of you finally”, Tiffany threatened.
“Do you have any idea if any woman at all has brought him any child?’,I asked carefully. Tiffany’s expression changed as she looked at her mother.
“What… woman…”,she said and her eyes shifted towards upstairs.
“Who the heck….”,she started to say when some commotions erupted from outside.
We all turned to the direction. Tiffany was the first to storm outside, followed by me then Madam Margret. Sister Eunice was locking Stella around her neck, trying to keep her from running.
You could imagine the shook on Tiffany’s face as she stared at the scene.
“What…what’s happening here!’,she shouted and stopped as she saw July running to me.
I carried her and looked over at Tiffany’s dumbfounded expression.
“Mummy…where is Jane?
Where is my sister?’,July asked to everyone’s hearing.
“Your…your… sister…’, Tiffany stammered. “We are here for her sister whom this traitor must have brought here”,I said as Tiffany waved her head, looking as if she was going to faint.
She turned desperately at Stella, demandingly. “What the hell is happening here…. somebody should tell me what’s happening!”,she screamed sounding like someone who was going to run mad from any moment.
Just then, Josh’s car rolled into the smooth compound…..
EPISODE 17 (Final)
As he came down from the car, everywhere became silent. He looked just the same except that he had grown taller and handsome. But his face remained the same. Our eyes locked immediately for a long time. He walked silently and slowly towards us and stood before me.
“Nnena’, he called, so passionately. I brought down July from my arms and looked at with through teary eyes. “Joshua”, I called out his complete name in a whisper. Tiffany and her mother stared at each other and looked back at us. Josh hugged me quietly but so tight. “How could you have done that to me? You put me through agony for the past few years.
You should have come back to me before now”, Josh said.
I withdrew myself from him and looked at his face.
“I didn’t come back for you…I never even thought I’d see you here…I only came to pick my daughter. I know she must be with you, please bring her for her sister can’t stay without her”, I said and saw the confused expression come quickly to his face.
“What do you mean by that…and by the way… what’s happening here?
Why is Stella being held that way?’, Josh asked, pointing at Stella and sister Eunice.
“She’s trying to get away after her demonic acts.
Just as much as I thought, Nnena.
She did not actually bring Jane to her father!
She took her else where and tried to play tricks on us”, sister Eunice said, holding her more thightly. My head exploded into tiny sparks from paper works.
I took a sharp look at Stella who fell on her knees.
“Please, tell me where you’ve taken my child to.
Please, tell me…I won’t do anything to you… please, just bring my daughter now”,I said going close to her when Josh drew me back and snuggled me to himself, calming me down.
“Am so sorry…Nnena! I never knew it would turn out like this!
I did not take Jane anywhere.
Jane is right here”, Stella said in a shaky voice, pointing towards the door.
I hurriedly looked at the door too and looked back at Stella.
“She is inside?”,I asked.
“Yes…after being cheeked up and treated by the doctor, she fell asleep… she’s inside the room”, Stella said.
“We have to go and get her…. sister Eunice”,I said.
Sister Eunice and I were about entering the house with Josh when Tiffany madly blocked the way, fiercely. “No!No way… she’s now my daughter!
How can Miranda be your daughter?
This is not possible…tell it’s not happening…please, don’t take her away from me… please”, Tiffany shouted still blocking the way.
I felt like slapping the daylight out of her as I stared at her. “What prove do you need again apart from her twin, standing here? Please, let me have my child and get outta here”, I said, losing every temper in me. “You are a just a crazy naive bitch who is so desperate to take people’s joy away. Go to hell, Nnena.. You can never have her back”, Tiffany barked at me and I totally lost it. I moved directly to her and gave her two non-stop dirty slaps that re sounded all over the compound. It actually threw her off balance as she fell against the door. I ignored the shook on her face and pointed at her face. “It’s better you get out of the way now or you will find it amazing at what am going to do to you!”,I screamed at her and Just then, the door opened and Jane sprinted out. “July!”, she cried and ran to embrace Jane. The twin girls hugged and I bent down with them. Josh began stammering as he stared at them. “Twins….my kids?”,Josh asked. Tiffany bent down and had a good cry. She stood up and ran inside the house. “Tiffany! Tiffany!’, Madam Margret shouted and went after her. I looked at the happy faces of the twin girls. “There… that is your father”, I told them and they stared up at Josh. Josh bent down too and hugged them both. “Oh my God ..I can’t believe this is happening… thank you God…”,Josh murmured, hugging the children. Sister Eunice smiled at me and I smiled back but there was something still on my mind. “Josh…I think it’s time we leave. I can’t stay here”, I said. When Josh looked at my face, the look in his eyes made me stop talking. He stood up in one swift movement. “If you really leave me again this time, then I will really die. If you leave me alone taking this lovely kids with you…I will hang myself”, Josh threatened with reddish eyes. I was alarmed as I stared at him, then looked at sister Eunice who smiled and nodded.
We arrived at Josh’s house after sister Eunice left with Stella, promising me she would get severally punished. I thanked the kind lady before parting ways with her. This was how I got to be again with my Josh. His house was of a great design I can not explain. He took me to our bedroom and showed me everything. Jane and July had their own room where toys and everything were stored inside. I was overjoyed that my life could change within a twinkle of an eye.
Three weeks later, we’ve gone shopping for our clothes and other things needed and I had a new full wardrobe to myself. I also got to realize that I gave birth to princesses by the time I started wearing them expensive clothes. The night Josh put his ting on my finger and proposed to me, Madam Margret and Tiffany came to apologize. She apologized for all the things she’s done to me and all the pains she caused me. Madam Margret also apologized for turning deaf ear to all my sufferings and pleaded to make peace with me. Who am I to say no? That was my mother in law talking and my sister in law too. That night we made peace and became one family. Tiffany really loved the twins so much and always takes them to stay with her and her husband during weekends and just one week to my wedding,Tiffany took in.
The day of our wedding came, bright and clear. And surprisingly, all the sisters and even head sister Lizzie came to Grace the occasion. The only person I did not see was Stella. She had also left the orphanage for somewhere I don’t know but she sent a letter. The wedding was one in town. They had July and Jane dressed in their own little wedding gowns and they looked so adorable that everyone who came to the wedding took their pictures. Soon, the wedding was over and Josh became my own wedded husband. Nine months later, I took in again while Tiffany gave birth to a bouncing baby boy. She felt on top of the world. The baby was named Jason. I also gave birth to a baby boy after another nine months.
Six years later,I was in my room, ransacking a particular drawer when I came in contact with a letter already full of dust. I dusted it and looked at it very well then smiled. Stella’s letter. I couldn’t get to read it all this while and it was the reason I actually started to remember the past.
I read the contents and was moved greatly by what she wrote.
A particular line,”you are a friend I never had and I really had it in mind to help you” really got me. She didn’t state her whereabouts but I wished her a happy fulfilled life just like mine.
I was finishing the last page when my children bounced in from school, talking loud.
“I know you already have a crush on Dan!’,Jane said to July as they came to meet me.
“Watch it, Jane! Or I will make you yell”, July yelled, feigning to be angry.
I smiled at them as they greeted me. I carried up my son, Jonathan and pecked him while July peeped into the letter on my laps. “What’re you reading, mum?”,she asked.
I smiled at them. “Well….let’s just say it is a soothing letter from the past”,I said and stood up.
“Now let’s go shower up before daddy returns, hmm?”,I said and we went out of the room, scooting and laughing.
So,I guess it is a case of all is well that ends well.
Thanks for following this story. I hope you enjoyed it. God bless you.
