He thought for some minutes on how it could be possible for Mabel’s genotype to had changed. That seems so impossible. He regretted in his heart that he could have prayed with Mabel or maybe gone to another place for the test for more confirmation as she had suggested then. He wished he never married Josephine. They were only compatible medically, they were not compatible in all other aspects. He kept looking at Mabel’s photoshoot frequently.
“They look so good together. I hope they enjoy their marriage and never endure it like mine.” he prayed within his heart. He noticed that Mabel was prettier in the picture because of the genuine smiles that showed on her lips. A beautiful smile coming from a transformed and repentant heart coupled with God’s faithfulness. He was going to shed tears when he quickly called himself back to his senses.
“It’s Mabel’s wedding. Why do I have to be so emotional? I should just be happy for her and that’s all.” He said.
He remembered that Mabel’s album launch is in two-months’ time and that made him more emotional. She’s also doing well musically. “Josephine will not even allow me to rehearse. She’s just against anything music. I don’t even know the type of spirit living in my wife. Is she possessed or something? What am I saying? Even devil loves music.”
He went on his knees and began to cry out to the Lord for mercy. He knew he had missed it.
It appears that God answered Thompson’s prayers and that of his parents. They had raised prayer altars for him since the day he had reported to them. Josephine’s parent had also intervened in their situation and called Josephine into order. Thompson too had been helping her to do some house chores. He observed that her main love language was acts of service. While she was away at work, he would do the cooking and some other necessary things.
Josephine was twenty-eight days pregnant too. That joy had crept into their family from the fetus Josephine was carrying. She had remained more calm though she wasn’t happy with the development. But, the love Thompson was showing her had overshadowed that and she had no option than to be happy too. There’s a way people respond to aura of love; even animals don’t resist it if they are shown.
Thompson was preparing for work when he remembered something.
“Darling, sorry please, I’m looking for a document. I left it here yesterday.” He called out to Josephine who was already in the bathroom.
“Where exactly did you put it?” she shouted from the bathroom for him to hear her well.
“Beside the small chair here. I was working on it and left it there. The file is here actually but there’s a document missing inside.”
“Oh, I think I kept it last night when I wanted to use the dressing mirror. I think it fell from the file.” She said.
“That’s true. I guess it’s the fan.”
“Yeah. The fan was helping you to work on it when you were sleeping.” She smiled.
He smiled, “Please, I’m late for work. Where did you keep it, Mrs. Book-keeper?”
“Check the wardrobe, where I kept some papers. Mr. Jonah.” She laughed.
“It’s not your fault.” He opened the wardrobe and brought out a book. He saw the file and picked it. As he was about to return it, an envelope fell from the book. He picked it up returned it. The envelope was slightly opened and he saw Calvary Hospital. The heading captivated him and he became curious to know what was there.
He opened it and it was a test result. He wanted to return it but his eyes went to the name. He saw Edwards Mabel. Mabel’s full name struck his mind. His eyes went to the type of test in a flash. It was genotype and the result was AA.
He screamed “Jesus!”
Josephine who was still singing as she was taking her bath was shocked to hear her husband scream that much, “Honey, what is it?”
“Jesus!” this was all what he could say.
“What is it? what happened? Did you receive any call?” she stopped what she was doing and rushed out.
She saw the envelope in his hands and a paper. She knew what was there. “I can explain. Honey, please let me just explain.”
Thompson became tired and rested his head on the wall, “What is this, Josephine?”
“Please let me explain.”
“I say what is this result doing in your wardrobe.”
She knelt down with her body dripping of water, “Honey, please let me explain.”
“You better do before I unleash my anger right now.” His eyes were so red and becoming scary. Josephine couldn’t behold him in that furious state. She began to say everything she knew about the result.
“That is Mabel’s result.”
“Yes? You’ve not answered my question.”
“I said what are you doing with it?”
“I changed it. This is her real result.” She confessed.
Thompson’s head was ringing. He was already sweating within him, “Why? Why are you doing all this? Why? What do you want to gain from doing all this? Mabel trusted you with her whole life. How did you achieve this?”
“I paid someone to do it for me.” she began to cry.
“Oh my God! This is a great wickedness you’ve done. How did you get here?” he asked shedding tears.
“I don’t want her to have you.”
“What are you saying?” He shouted at her.
“I’d been with you all these while yet you kept chasing her. And I’d always gotten whatever I wanted in any way. Moreover, I don’t want you to regret later because she can’t be good enough for your life and what you carry.” Her voice was shaking.
“Can you hear yourself? No, can you hear what you are saying?”
“I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to harm you. Please, forgive me.”
“In my entire life, the miserable thing that has ever happened to me was knowing you. The more miserable thing is ever coming to you and the most miserable thing I will forever regret is comparing you with Mabel. She’s far……. far……. far better than you in every way. You are just a sheep in wolf’s clothing. So, what have you added to my life and what I carry since you came? Answer me!” he yelled.
“I’m sorry. Please, I’m sorry. I was not getting any younger and my friends are married. No man was coming close to me at all. Even my friend who are males told me to my face that they would rather go single than choosing someone like me. I was ashamed and I don’t want to be mocked. Please, have mercy on me. It’s not my fault, you are the only man who truly understands me and took me for who I am and I don’t want to lose it. If I do; my happiness is at stake.” She pleaded.
“You know what? I hate you right now. I’m done with this conversation right now. The church must see this.” He removed his tie and stepped out of the room.
She tried to stand up but her spine held her down. She managed to do that. She followed Thompson who was walking down the staircase. “Honey, I beg you in the name of God. Remember you promised me not to make me sad. Please, let’s fight this together.” Her eyes were filled with tears. She cried like a baby.
Thompson didn’t look back at her wife. He was moving at a faster pace to report her to her father. she couldn’t take it anymore. She tried to also run as fast as her legs could take her. “Please, have mercy on me at least for the sake of your baby.” She didn’t watch her steps and looked at Thompson. She wanted to take the next step but she missed it. She fell from the stairs and rolled down to the floor. Thompson heard a thud. He was still moving when he realized that he didn’t hear his wife’s voice anymore. He looked back and saw her on the floor.
He rapidly ran to where his wife was lying helplessly in a flash. Her face was down. As he lifted her up, blood was gushing out of her head. “Help, please help. Who is around?” he bawled for help. Nobody was forthcoming. He ran back into the apartment and get the car key. He carried her into the car. “Josephine, please I’m sorry. Please don’t do this for me. Oh my God! Have mercy on me.”
He started the car and zoomed off to the hospital. He ran into the hospital and bellowed, “Emergency, Emergency……..” the nurses on duty rushed to his car and wheeled out Josephine. She lied lifeless with blood still gushing out of her forehead. “Please, Josephine, wake up, I’ve forgiven you.” He was shivering while placing a call to Reverend James; Josephine’s father and his parents likewise. He couldn’t sit or stand.
Reverend James and his wife came to the hospital immediately. They were panicking. Thompson couldn’t explain what happened. The document that caused the problem had been misplaced. He was unable to pick the particular place he left it. it was like he dropped it when he was looking for the car key.
“What happened exactly?” Revd. James asked.
“She fell sir.” Thompson answered sweating profusely.
“How come? How did that happen? Did she just slum?” Revd. James asked.
“Or did you hit my daughter?” Revd. (Mrs.) James shouted at Thompson.
“No sir, I didn’t do anything like that. She fell from the stairs.” Thompson explained with tears.
Revd. (Mrs.) James held Thompson by his collar, “You better pray nothing happens to my daughter. Because I won’t take it lightly with you.”
“Mummy, I didn’t hit her ma.” Thompson’s heart was beating so fast.
Revd. James separated them and asked his wife to sit. Thompson fell flat on the ground. He prostrated and was praying to God. “Lord, please have mercy on me. Vindicate me O Lord. Please, have mercy on me. I’m sorry Lord. Just give me a second chance. A second chance is enough. Please Lord, help me to save Josephine.”
Thompson’s parent came around and asked after her well-being.
Thompson stood up and went back to his knees again. “The doctors are attending to her. Mummy please, pray for me. I didn’t touch her o. Help me to tell God to save my wife. I don’t know if He will hear me if I tell him.” He was rubbing his hands pleading with his parents on his knees.
The nurses were running to save her life. The doctor had to call one of his senior colleagues to help him on the case. Reverend James called some of the church members he trusted to raise prayer altars for Josephine.
Mabel was with her producer when Samson called her about Josephine’s case. She left immediately because she was unable to concentrate on the project. She went home, locked herself up and began to pray for Josephine.
“O Lord of mercy, please touch Sister Josephine with your healing power. Have mercy on her. Lord please, we need her. Don’t take her away from us.” She was crying and pleading for mercy.
So many people were doing the same at every point. Not because of who Josephine was but it was all about Reverend James’ personality. He had been a nice man to the brethren. So many people he had helped to pay their rent fee and some their school fees. Many of the church members prayed for him with pity. They knew Josephine was the only daughter who knew the way of the Lord even though she didn’t thoroughly walk in it. His eldest daughter; Jasmine, was a divorcee and single mother in Canada. Reverend James and his wife had not supported her for any of these acts but Jasmine would not listen. He sat and looked up to heavens. He couldn’t behold his dearest wife sitting on the floor while asking God to bring back his second daughter. He remembered when he carried her on his shoulders when she was four. The father to daughter bond was so strong between them. He remembered holding her on her wedding day. He could pick the pure smile from her lips. Tears filled his face, “God, you know all things. Please, put a smile on my face over Josephine. I don’t have to cry over my daughters, Jasmine had caused me a lot and that’s enough.”
Deacon Adedara on the other hand was just asking God for mercy. He had just one child and he had married the wrong person. Looking at his son who had refused to listen to the God now shouting for help made him shiver. The statement Thompson made that he doesn’t know if God would hear him made him cold. He folded his arms and pleaded for mercy over his son. He should not be a widower at this early stage of his life.
Thompson could not explain how his wife fell from the stairs. The injury on her head was so pronounced that no one would believe she had fallen. It was like someone hit her on the head. The stress Thompson had gone through had made him even to forget about the genotype issue. He had no shoes on. He had loosed his belt. He folded the sleeves of his shirt after a very long time. This was what he would always do joyfully but was forced by his wife to stop. But this day, he folded it when he was fighting for the life of that wife.
One of the doctors came out and the five of them ran to him.” Yes doctor, please how is my wife?” Thompson asked.
“Mr. Thompson, please calm down.” The doctor said.
Revd.(Mrs.) James pushed Dncs. Adedara away. She thought it was Thompson who mishandled her daughter, “Doctor, don’t hide anything from me. How is my daughter?”
“Mummy, she’s fine. Just take things easy here.” The doctor answered her calmly. “Daddy, daddy and Mr. Thompson, let me have a word with you.” He beaconed on the two fathers and Thompson. He took them to his office. The two mothers didn’t talk to each other. As Dncs. Adedara sat on the chair, Revd.(Mrs.) James stood up.
After fifteen minutes, the three men came out and looked so unhappy.
“What happened to her? Don’t tell me she…….” Josephine’s mother cried out.
“No she didn’t die.” Revd. James stopped her.
“Then, why are you all looking like this?” She said. Reverend James called her to a side and was explaining everything the doctor had told them to her.
Thompson was walking aimlessly leaving the hospital bare footed. The nurses and his parents ran to him and held him. He pleaded with them to leave him alone and allow him to die in peace but they held on to him. He was taken back to the hospital where he was asked to sit and relax for some time.
“Who’s going to tell me what happened?” Dncs. Adedara spoke out after their actions had successfully confused her.
“She lost her baby.!” Her husband answered.
Dncs. Adedara felt so sad, “Oh my God! After all these years….”
“That’s not the end. She hit her head so bad and the doctor said it has affected a part of her brain. I’ve forgotten the name he called it.”
“So?” Dncs. Adedara asked.
Josephine’s mother just got the whole gist. She ran out and fell to the ground. She stood up and was coming towards Thompson when everyone in the premises resisted her. They calmed her down but she became so aggressive. Reverend James rested his head on his car. He was shedding tears.
“I’m in the dark dear, what exactly did the doctor say?” Dncs. Adedara asked. Thompson couldn’t say a word from his mouth anymore. He just opened his mouth and shifted his gaze at his father who was about to spill the bitter truth.
“The doctor said she will not be able to talk again. He said memory problems or something.” Deacon Adedara said.
“Jesus!” Dncs. Adedara screamed.
Thompson remembered the word of his father long ago that “it is only in the will of God that you find peace.” Those words began to ring in his head. He was in the worst state of mind. He felt like dying but death refused to come. Josephine won’t be able to do many things on her own again. He would have to feed her with food, clothe her and even speak for her. She would not go to work anymore. He regretted ever shouting at her in the first place. His father could not do anything than to comfort him and calm him down.
Three weeks after, Mabel and Samson came to visit Thompson and his wife. He was inside their apartment doing laundries. He was busy washing his wife’s clothes when he heard a knock. Although, Josephine was in the sitting room, she was just staring at the door. Thompson came out to open the door.
“Good afternoon sir.” Mabel smiled.
“Oh, Mabel.” Thompson ushered them into the house.
“Sis. Josephine, good afternoon ma.” Williams greeted her but she couldn’t give any reply. All she could do was to stare.
Thompson answered on her behalf, “she’s fine. Thank you.” He had accepted his fate.
“We came to check on you sir and sister J. I was preparing for my album launch when the incident happened sir.” Mabel said.
“No problem, I understand. Actually, that was why I couldn’t make it.” Thompson said.
“Oh no sir. It is well sir. We are praying for you sir.” Samson said.
“We just came to give you your hard copy of the album sir. Free sir.” Mabel handed over the album to him.
Thompson was happy, “Thank you so much.” He showed Josephine. She was just staring at him. She didn’t even have a clue of what was happening.
“We will be on our way now sir.” Samson said.
“Alright, thank you so much. And yes, how is the preparation for your wedding? Hope it’s going well.” Thompson asked.
“Very well.” Samson and Mabel answered with gladness.
“The day is blessed.”
“I’m so sorry in advance. I won’t be able to make it. You know, I will have to be with Josephine.”
“Ha, no sir. We understand.”
As they rose on their feet to leave the house, an obnoxious smell filled the air. Thompson knew it was his wife who had defecated on her body again. He bowed his head in shame. Mabel and Samson left immediately.
Thompson was watching them till they got to the gate. They held each other’s hands. He looked at the album and lifted up his head to see them. Samson opened the gate for Mabel and the later stepped out happily. Thompson shook his head, “that could have been me. Samson had found a great treasure.” He looked at his wife who had messed up the whole room. “Why are you doing this to me? I’d been working tirelessly. So I will have to clean you up and suspend everything. Josephine didn’t say a word neither did her countenance change.
He remembered what Mabel told him the day she got to know that it was Josephine who changed her genotype. She just smiled and said, “I’m not angry sir because I have nothing to lose. Samson is the perfect man for me. My regards to my mentor, sister J.” She said and left immediately that day.
Thompson had run out of tears. He had battled with a lot since the condition of his wife started. “Mabel was only trying to tell me that I was the one who lost many things. Josephine had become a liability even to me.” He got a bowl of water and big towel. He got to his wife and carried her. He was already tired. Josephine fell from his hands causing the feces to spread to another place. “I will clean you up. Disobedience is a mess on its own!”
James 1:14-15 ESV
“But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death”
