“It was from a woman.” She answered.
“A woman? What was the message about then?” He asked again.
“I don’t know if it was a young lady. She sent the message like your son is very sick… I can’t vividly remember the message in details. But she sent something like your son is very sick and he’s at the hospital. And I knew you once told me that you love male children. I didn’t give you any male child so I seeing the message, I concluded you were having an extra-marital affairs and you already had a son out of the relationship.” She was sobbing.
“Are you serious?” He was shocked.
“Yes, I’m very serious.” She answered.
“Did I save the number?”
“No, you didn’t. I realized you were hiding the identity of that person.”
“You are just asking me questions. Didn’t you have an affair? Don’t you have a son?” she asked wiping tears from her eyes and looking at her husband irritatingly.
They were in front of their house already. The gateman opened the gate and they entered. Reverend James didn’t bother to park the car very well. He just came out and opened the door for his wife. He held her hand and they walked inside. The gateman was very surprised seeing them together in that manner. Josephine was eating cornflakes in the living room when they entered. She stood on her feet to greet them but they didn’t answer her. She felt she was dreaming her parents holding each other’s hands. Reverend James knew he had to explain himself and settle things with his wife.
They walked into the room. Reverend James helped his wife to sit on the bed. He came before his wife and held her left hand. He didn’t know where to start but he was picking his words one after the other.
“Dear, you misunderstood the whole issue. I remembered the message as you were talking inside the car. It was from Mabel and it was about his son. Before God and man, I have never gotten into any extra-marital affair and will never get into one. Yes, I might have told you I love boys but God gave me two beautiful daughters and I appreciate Him for that. As a matter of fact, Jasmine had two sons. Are they not my children too? Of course they are. Then, Mabel wanted to travel and she sent me a text, I think with her second number. I called her the next day to verify the identity of the sender. I’m so sorry. I should have informed you then. But I thought it was not necessary.” He explained.
“You should have told me.” She uttered with regret.
“That was the mistake. But the main issue here is for me to be sure you trust me and believe everything you are telling me. I don’t have any child aside Jasmine and Josephine.” He went on his knees and was pleading. “Please dear, it was a misconception. Don’t allow that to tear our marriage of thirty-two years apart. I love you so much. In fact, I’d missed your genuine smile from within and everything about you.”
“I’m so sorry too. I should have asked. I should have trusted you more. I shouldn’t have concluded in my heart.” She lifted her husband up still weeping.
Reverend James missed this intimacy between his wife and himself. The atmosphere was getting intense romantically. They both looked into each other’s eyes for the umpteenth time. At this stage, Josephine left the door quietly after listening to every of their conversation.
“I think we should bless God for Deaconess Adedara’s kidnap.” Reverend James said.
“But why?” She looked at him and they both laughed.
“The incident brought us together now. You know sometimes God does some unquestionable things to rearrange some situations just like ours.” He replied.
“Oh, I understand. Let’s thank God for the kidnap then.” They chuckled.
“As a matter of fact, the Bible says, ‘give thanks in everything.” She said.
“No o. It is, in everything; give thanks” he tickled her.
“Stop now! Ehn, is it not the same thing?” She laughed.
They stared at each other for long.
A Saturday morning. Mabel had come to visit Dncs. Adedara after her discharge from the hospital. Thompson appreciated Mabel for helping them to rescue his mother. Dncs. Adedara’s love for her had increased to a greater level that she couldn’t explain. Deacon Adedara really showed his appreciation to her, “Mabel my daughter, thank you so much. This whole issue had taught me a very great lesson that God can decide to use anybody for anybody. In fact, my wife was asking God to forgive her yesterday of any negative thing she might have thought about you or said to you. Thank you for everything.”
“Daddy, you don’t need to appreciate me at all. Let’s thank God sir.” Mabel answered.
Thompson collected the car key from her father. He wanted to drop Mabel in her shop. He seized the medium to ask her the question that had been running in his mind all these while.
“So Mabel, did you know Don?”
“Yes, I knew him. I knew him very well.”
“Very well again? I should be scared of you now.” He grinned.
“Why do you grin? Did I say something funny?”
“Yes, it’s funny. When you are so confident with the fact that you know him very well.”
“I only said the truth. I knew him.”
“So, how come?” He asked.
“When I was still in that former stuff. I used to give them some of my clients who are so rich. Sometimes, they will kidnap them for ransom and some will be duped. We do share the money too.” Mabel explained.
“Oh, now I see. I understand.” He nodded his head
“What do you understand? I’m not having anything to do with him anymore.”
He laughed, “I’m only telling you I understand what you are saying now. I trust you now.”
“That reminds me. I think now that you are settled, we should talk about us.” Mabel changed the discussion.
“About us?” he asked. “So what are we talking about us?
“I’d prayed about it.” Mabel smiled as she observed that Thompson’s reaction had changed. He sat with keen interest to know the outcome of his proposal.
“So?” he parked his car and removed his seat belt quickly. “I’m all ears.”
Mabel cachinnated, “Why did you park? No, just tell me the reason behind the parking.”
“Mabel now, just tell me the outcome of the prayer. Let me know my score line, please.”
“Alright. I submitted the petition to the author of mankind. And……… hmmmmm.”
“Mabel, talk now.”
“It’s a YES.
Thompson gained admission for his second degree. Mabel’s name came out with the second batch. Their relationship was just one month old. Josephine had felt the greatness in her parent’s new life. It had touched her in so many ways. Her car key had been returned to her and everything was going on well for her except for the relationship of Mabel and Thompson. But there was nothing she could do about it. She still speaks with Thompson once in a while.
On a Sunday afternoon after the church service, Thompson walked up to her to hand over the key to the choir’s store.
“Phinny, happy Sunday.” He smiled.
“Yeah, happy Sunday. How was the service?” Josephine asked.
“It was great. The key.”
“Oh, let me have it.” She collected the key from him.
“Thank you.” He turned back.
“Thompson!” Josephine called him. “That reminds me, what of Mabel? She’s not in church today.”
“Yes, she’s not in church. She had started her registration in school.” Thompson explained.
“Oh, that’s true. It is well. Since you guys started this relationship, she has been hiding so many things from me.”
“You are friends, Phinny. You can call her to tell her o. I don’t know anything about that.” He smiled.
“I hope you’ve done your genotype? Are you compatible. You know you are AS.”
The words rang in Thompson’s head. “We will do it as soon as she comes back.” He replied and left immediately.
Mabel suspended everything she was doing and came back for the genotype test. She would have done it in school but the only accepted one is at Calvary Hospital where Josephine worked. She didn’t do it during her former undergraduate registration. She submitted a fake result where she wrote AS. She was so scared that might be her real genotype.
She called Josephine when she got to the hospital that Wednesday morning but she was on leave. She couldn’t come to help her carry out the test because she had travelled to visit her aunty within the city and would be back in the next four days. Josephine called a colleague of hers to help with that. She was to collect the result the next two days.
That night on Thursday, a figure was seen creeping quietly into the laboratory. The human figure wore a white lab coat and the face was covered. No one heard the sound coming from the quiet walking legs. The laboratory was so quiet except for the noise from the fan. The human figure picked a test result and exchanged it for another writing a new name on one.
The human figure was a male. He locked the laboratory and left.
On Friday, Mabel couldn’t eat or drink anything. She had prayed before sleeping the night before. She left very early to the hospital. She collected her result in an envelope and opened it as soon as she stepped outside. She closed it quickly and called Thompson.
Thompson picked up the call, “hello dear, how are you doing?”
“I’m doing very great. And you?”
“I’m fine too. So, have you collected the result?”
“Yes, I have it with me here.” She answered.
“Alright, so what is it?” he asked with enthusiasm.
“It’s not possible.” Thompson said.
Mabel was on her knees. “Dear, I’m not saying it is possible. All I’m saying is that you should just give me the chance to run this test again elsewhere before you make the decision.”
“I said I won’t take that from you.”
“Please, let me just do it again. I’m just convinced it might not be the same.” Mabel pleaded.
“So, you are telling me your genotype will change from AS to AA over the night right?” he asked
“No, I’m only trying to…….
“Enough, please save me all these flimsy and baseless explanations. Didn’t you go to school? Don’t you know what it means when an AS marries an AS? I think you should know better.” Thompson was fuming with anger.
“Please, let’s give it a try again. Let me do this test again.” Mabel was weeping.
“You better wipe your tears and stand up. It can’t work out. It can’t at all.”
“Thompson, are you joking?” Mabel stood up.
“See, don’t think I’m not pained here. Mabel, I’m not happy with the issue at all. But it’s better we know now so we will be able to figure out things. You don’t have to go for any unnecessary test again. As a matter of fact, the one for the church is the most recognized one. So, why go through that stress.”
“But it won’t cost us anything at all.”
“I know it won’t cost us anything but I don’t have the time and there’s no point at all going through the stress.”
Mabel was hurt to the bone marrow. He left Thompson’s office and went home. She just laid on the bed all day. She didn’t bother to call Josephine. She had run out of tears. She made up her mind not to weep anymore. She folded the result and kept it in her wardrobe. She picked up her phone and put ‘You alone by Rayz’ on repeat. As she listened, she began to understand that it is only in God she could fine joy, peace and most especially true love. The spirit of the Lord led her to Isaiah 41:10, she jumped up and got her Bible to open. She read aloud, “fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”
She began to shed tears and worship God as the song played on her phone. Another scripture dropped on her mind. She opened and read again. It was Romans 5:8 which says, “I loved you at your darkest.” She was just worshipping God and confessing His promises over her life.
Thompson became devastated and couldn’t help it. he told his parents and they were short of words too.
“I just think you should still pray about this again.” Deacon Adedara said.
“Dad, you know what? I’m not praying about this anymore. Do you know how many things I’d encountered because of this Mabel lady? I’m just tired of everything. She can’t be the only will of God for my life daddy.”
“Oh really? I don’t know there are many options then. Maybe you should pick from anyone available.” His father rose up to his feet and left him.
Thompson was not even moved by his father’s reaction. “She has frustrated me so much. I don’t even know how I managed to receive her in the first place. She had a son, she doesn’t even know anything about me. We are still trying to build relationship and many things are just happening. I can’t continue with this anymore.”
His mother was just looking at him. She loved Mabel so much especially for the fact she had rescued her recently. “So, it’s now you know all these things. What will it cost you to ask her to go and do it elsewhere. I’m not saying the genotype will change but you will give her a reason to hold on to that you really loved her. Even with this one that you have done, she will think you never loved her in the first place. And since you said there are many wills, so choose another option as you wish. I’m sensing you already know more than your father. I just pray you don’t regret what you are doing.” She stood up and left him too.
“What are these people saying? I think they don’t know the meaning of AS getting along with AS. Nobody is thinking in my direction here at all.” He entered his room in annoyance. “I think I need to set my priorities right here. I’m the one who want to be in a relationship. Nobody should determine and live my life for me. Even God has given us the right to choose. I’ve been listening to their instructions all these while. Let me follow my heart this time around. In the real sense, apart from Mabel, the only person I’m close to is Josephine. Let me even grade the two of them and see the result.” He thought within himself.
He brought out his jotter and pen. He made a tabular phone. He writes; spirituality, beauty. friendship level, intelligence, sociability, maturity and financial standing. He began the grading. Spirituality, he gave Josephine 60% and Mabel 40%. Beauty; he scored Josephine 70% and Mabel 30%…………….
