Part 29
I LOVE YOU, BUT….
Opeyemi Akintunde

Remi couldn’t believe what had just happened. As she sat in the ride back home, she kept wishing she was dreaming.

” How can mummy prefer to stay back with Mrs Winter instead of going with her children and husband?” Remi questioned within herself.

She also thought of what she imagined Freeman had seen his wife doing.

” How can she be committing immorality with that woman…I knew it, I said that woman was a witch.” Remi thought

” Daddy, we can’t leave mummy with that woman. She is a witch, she will kill mummy ” Remi blurted out suddenly in the car.

” Yes Daddy… Mrs Winter behaves like an evil person. I don’t like her. Please let’s go back to pick mummy” Venita said as well.

” But, you were both there when she refused following us.”

” She has been bewitched Daddy. I read in a book that once a person is under the bewitchment of witches, they are no longer in charge of their senses. Mummy is no more thinking like her usual self. We have to help her.” Remi said schooling Freeman.

” You are right Remi, but I am sure if you study further, you will realise you can’t use physical force on someone that has been bewitched. You can only pray for them to be delivered from the bewitchment.” Freeman replied

” Will you pray for her?” Remi asked a very direct question. She had never spoken with so much confidence and directness to her boss but she needed to at this point.

Freeman did not give an answer because he wasn’t sure he would do it. He was emotionally shattered to say a word of prayer concerning anything.

” Daddy?” Venita said implying she was waiting for the answer to Remi’s question.

” I will” Freeman said

” A promise is a debt.” Juanita said.

They thought she had slept off, but she had been listening in on the conversation all along.

” I promise.” Freeman replied. He wanted his children to be happy, so he was ready to lie to them. He knew Pamilerin was out of their lives forever because he didn’t think he would be able to stand sleeping with her on the same bed after what he saw that evening. If the business investment pulled through, he would relocate to Ghana. Remarry and settle his family there. He would travel to Nigeria for his business dealings.

Freeman had seen the perfect future ahead.

********

” I don’t know if what I am doing is right? I am leaving my family for you.” Pamilerin said as she laid on Winter’s laps in the living room.

” You will get back your daughters. Once we relocate, you will ask for custody. Babe we have some strong backing”

” What strong backing?”

” There is a group of strong black lesbian women who support lesbian women who leave their husbands. They will set you up big time, help you get custody of your children and if your husband is becoming too troublesome, they can take him out of the way and recover all that he has for you.

Pamilerin, you have a good case. If we do a video and send it to them, firstly in one week they would send you nothing less than fifty thousand dollars to start your life again.”

” Fifty thousand dollars…Why would they give me that?”

” You will say your husband caught you making out with your girlfriend and he sent you out of the house, took your daughters from you and now you are homeless and penniless”

” Oh!”

” Babe, that could even make them send for you, they would arrange your visa to America. That way we can travel together.”

” My daughters?”

” They have the best international lawyers”

” But the video will go viral..people will call me names… I won’t be able to show my face in public…”

” No, who said anything about making the video public. The video is only for the society. We send it to their pr!vate mail.”

” Are you sure?”

” Yes!”

” Give me some time to think about it.” Pamilerin said

” Your guardian you told me about, tell me more about her…” Winter asked. She needed to prepare Pamilerin against any intervention from that quarters. Pamilerin spoke about her with so much reverence and Winter perceived she was the kind of woman who could drag Pamilerin forcefully back to her marriage…

” She such a wonderful woman. You know like I told you, I came into her house as a maid, but she enrolled me in school and gave me an education. “

” Pr!vate or Public school?”

” Public school” Pamilerin answered

” Her kids? Public or Pr!vate?”

” Pr!vate school definitely!” Pamilerin said laughing. ” Infact they went to the best schools”

” While she sent you to a public school. I don’t like her, I mean if she really wanted to help you, she should have sent you to the same schools her children attended.”

” Well, I thought about that some times but I waved it aside thanking God for the average education I got.. if I wasn’t educated I won’t have met you” Pamilerin said laughing

” True…True but I can assure you, even if I had met you as an illiterate, I would have still married you anyway…” Winter said

Winter’s phone rang… It was her husband calling. The caller ID showed ” SH” which was the short form for Sweetheart.

Pamilerin took the phone…

” SH… Sweetheart? Hmm? Who is this?” Pamilerin asked

” SH? Sweetheart? Is that what SH means to you…For me it is “Stupid Human Being”. It is my dead husband’s brother calling me. He is begging to marry me after his brother’s death…” Winter said

” Are you serious?” Pamilerin replied buying the lie.

” Yes, his name is Andrew…So ugly a man, let me see if I have one of his pictures…”

*******

” Which course did she go for?” Ajoke could tell Freeman was telling her lies. She could read it in Remi’s eyes.

Remi wished she could tell Mama what was happening. She knew Ajoke was not any better than Winter as regards diabolism, but Remi knew Ajoke would go to the house and cause trouble. That trouble could bring Pamilerin home.

Remi was about opening her mouth to say the truth but Freeman stared hard at her.

On getting home, they had met Mama at the entrance of the house. Freeman had quickly instructed the girls not to say a word about their mother’s whereabouts.

” Tell Grandma your mother went for a course. “

” That would be lying.” Venita said. Theresa and Juanita were asleep already

” It is important we do that for now.. Remi take the girls to their room.”

******

” Freeman, where is my daughter? Is my daughter dead?”

” No mama, she is not… You can call her number..”

” She has blocked my number from calling her.” Ajoke said

” Oh!”

” I don’t believe the story about her going for a course.”

The sound of a car horn cut in between their conversation…

” Is that her?” Ajoke said

Freeman couldn’t say a word. He was ready to cut off Pamilerin’s head if she stepped into the house.

Instead of answering Ajoke, he rushed out but on seeing the car blaring the horn, he knew the day was far from been over…

Dearest Mom also did not buy the lie about the course.

“Freeman, look me in the eye and tell me your wife went on a course.” Maurine said in a cool tone yet firm.

” Ye…No…” Freeman stutterred

” Thank you.So where is she?”

” At a friend’s place?” Freeman said but Remi coughed.

” Remi go to your room, Now!” Freeman said

” Grandmas , mummy is not with a friend, she is with a witch that wants to scatter the family..” Remi said in a rush

“Remi …Remi…Keep quiet” Freeman said charging towards her.

” Freeman…let her be…” Maurine said

“Remi, where is my daughter? ” Ajoke said rushing towards Remi…

*******

Winter had the feeling she needed to get Pamilerin out of that house. She knew if Freeman was smart, he would bring elders to the house very early in the morning… Winter knew it was dangerous leaving in the morning.

Her game plan had changed. Now Pamilerin was the one being played not Freeman. Her new game plan was simple. Get Pamilerin to kill Freeman and when Pamilerin gets Freeman’s money, she would swindle Pamilerin and run back to Canada. Simple as ABC…

” Babe, Let’s go have fun tonight…” Winter said. Her plan was for them to escape for a few days. She had to trick Pamilerin into leaving the house.

” Fun ? Tonight? Where? By the pool?” Pamilerin asked very amused. The word ” Fun” made her heart jump in excitement. Marriage had made her lose her sense of fun. Her years had been filled with serving Freeman and the girls.

There were times she suggested they travelled for a few days, but she was always the person to pull down the suggestion because of the money involved.

Pamilerin didn’t like spending money, she wanted to save all the money she could get in the world. She came from a poor background and she had sworn never to be poor.

” No, out of the house. I heard of this pr!vate beach house where a lot of crazy fun things happen. Let’s go have some crazy fun” Winter said in a tempting way

” Ok, that sounds nice but What if I see someone who knows me there.” Pamilerin said

” I can assure you no one that lives like you will be there…” Winter said “Entrance fee is 500k per couple.”

” Five hundred thousand Naira for a night ?” Pamilerin was beyond amazed

” Yes…”

” What’s happening there that will make them take Five hundred thousand naira from me?” Pamilerin said

” Let’s get there first…” Winter said giggling like a child.

Pamilerin’s phone rang, it was Dearest Mom calling…

” Talk about the angel. The woman we were talking about just now is calling …” Pamilerin said

” Angelic devil you mean!” Winter said

Pamilerin laughed…

Pamilerin was about picking up, when Winter took the phone from her. Unknown to Pamilerin, Winter intentionally received the call and placed the phone faced down on the table…

” Babe, what are you planning to do, pick her call? You want to spoil our evening…” Winter said

” No, I guess she is back and wants to check on me.” Pamilerin replied

” Or you want to know what she got for you from abroad?” Winter teased

” Buy something for me? That would be in my dreams…Dearest Mom can be selfish when it comes to buying things from overseas”

” Really?”

” Yeah, like we were saying the other time, just like she sent her kids to pr!vate school and I had to go to a public school, the same way she hardly bought me stuff from abroad. Most times, I got lucky when what she bought for her daughters didn’t fit them well…”

” See!”

*******

Dearest Mom couldn’t believe what she was hearing over the phone… She had her eyes wide opened in shock. Her heart raced the fastest it had in years.

She picked up her bag, stood up and walked out of the living room into her car. Freeman wondered what was happening…

” Mom! What’s wrong?”

Dearest Mom looked up at Freeman with tears in her eyes…

” So despite everything I did for your wife, to her it wasn’t enough… Jerry, let’s go home” Maurine said

” Mama, what is it, what did she say ?” Ajoke said in a pleading voice…

Maurine sobbed like a baby as Jerry drove off…

******

Winter went to where the phone was. She saw that that Maurine had not ended the call…Winter smiled knowing she had achieved her purpose. Winter ended the call.

Winter quickly sent a text…

” Thank you ma for all you ever did for me, though it was second best to what you gave your daughters. I still appreciate it. I hope to repay you financially someday for every dime you spent on me. Please do not call me again. I am happy to be free from you forever…” Pamilerin

Winter sent the text, deleted it from the sent folder. She blocked the number from calling Pamilerin.

*******

Dearest Mom received the text…

She read the text over 10 times, at first the text broke her heart, but at some point she suspected something was off. The text didn’t have was the usual tone of Pamilerin’s text. She didn’t use any emoji.

” Maybe she told her friend to send the message… I heard her voice saying terrible things about me.” Maurine resolved in her heart.

*******

After Maurine left, Ajoke was not planning to hold her peace…

” Take me to where she is this night!”

” Mummy, it has to wait till morning. The place is two or three hours from here”

” It doesn’t matter, I must get to my daughter tonight. What if she dies before morning “

” All the better…” Freeman said under his breath

” What did you say?” Ajoke said holding Freeman’s shirt collar…

” Mummy, I said all the better” Freeman said raising his voice. It was obvious he had lost it. All his pent up emotions were about to explode ..

” Mummy, it is better she dies than what she is doing now. Mummy, Pamilerin is sleeping with a woman.” Freeman said with tears flowing down his face…

Ajoke stepped back in shock…

” God forbid!”

” Yes! God Forbid!”

” With the witch? “

” Yes…”

” Ha! Pamilerin has killed me, the woman wants to take her Glory and kill her, that is what some high level witches do…Ha! Freeman you must take me there now, please.”

” Mummy, please I can’t drive there tonight. I am exhausted…I drove there this evening and drove back again. I can imagine what my blood pressure would be reading now… I am sorry mummy, I can’t take you there, but I can give you the address, and get you a taxi if they will be willing to go that route by this time ..”

” Ok, get me a taxi ” Ajoke was resolute and unswerving. She was going to face the witch that night.

Freeman on the other hand had thought Ajoke would agree to go the next morning, but he could tell there was no stopping her. A part of him wanted to see Pamilerin again and beg her to come home, but the other part of him was still very angry at her…

Love however conquered…

” Let me take you there…” Freeman said to Ajoke…
