Sola slammed the kitchen door and sat on the floor and cried bitterly. She was trying to make Victor’s meal before he went into a rage and slapping spree.
“God! Why art thou forsaken me? God!!! Why didn’t you save me from my ignorance? He’s going to kill me one day”
She had quit her job after pressure from victor and the constant bruises wouldn’t even let her hang around people to avoid questions and raised brows. The church was a taboo nowadays for her precious husband who suspected people will begin to talk about him or put ideas in his wife’s head.
“I can’t believe Victor will even think of laying his hands on me” she cried bitterly. “I should really go back to my first love and make it all right rededicating my life to him and pray for my husband! He will help me and maybe change Victor”
“No! He has forsaken me” she wrestle with her own words “If he hadn’t forsaken me, he wouldn’t have allowed all this to happen to me! He should have told me I was being deceived when I was courting victor, He should have stopped me from making the decision to marry victor!!!! -She replied her thought.
Victor walked in with belt in his hand without any suspicion to Sola who was lost in thought and was crying heavily
“Where’s my food?” he asked angrily
“Ehm….. Your food…. is….” She pointed her finger to the pot.
“Later I will be tagged a bad person. You are here crying like a baby and making yourself useless as a wife” he moved closer and held her chin. “I’ll teach you how to treat your husband like a king. The belt landed on her back before it went round her body. For five minutes, the beating continued despite all her pleas.
“I’m not eating that poison you call food anymore! Useless whore! I have lost my appetite. If this happens next time, I will let you know that today’s beating was just a rehearsal!” he gave her one last kick before he walked out.
Sola cried helplessly. Brutally wounded, she crawled her was through the house to her room.
“he deceived me, victor lied” she bit her fingers in regret “I thought he was my perfect man, carried away by the love I had for him” the recollection of the dream she had about the flower started to make sense. Go had warned her after all. Suddenly, she remembered the dream she had about the flower that was trampled by the prince.
“God you warned me but I was foolish to see it” the bed was beginning to get soaked with tears but that was the least of her problems. The worse thing was that there was no walking away from the marriage. What would people say? That was one of Sola’s worries. After hours of excruciating pain, she finally fell asleep.
“No! Please! Help! Help me! Don’t let them take me away! They will kill me! Please” sola pleaded from her sleep. It was another nightmare. This time, she was pleading with an old man to save her from the chains of some hoodlums who were about to take her away. The old man looked at her and with a smile he loosened her chains and helped her escape. That moment, she woke up with sweat all over her body. The time was already
“6:45am key? Did I sleep this long?” the tension she felt made her rush to the bathroom to take a cold shower. By the time she was through, she went to Victor’s room to see if he was okay, his room door was open but he wasn’t inside. One would ask why she would even try to check up on him when he would just do what he has always done, making her life miserable. But poor Sola was willing to try every single day to make her marriage work. Before she could pick her phone to call him and ask of his whereabouts, he called.
“Open the door front door” he said and hung up. By the time she was opening it, before her was her darling husband with his arms wrapped around another woman’s waist as they fondle each other’s body.
“Who’s this in our house?”
“You meant to say my house”
“This is Cynthia my girlfriend who hasn’t slept with my father, she is my new found love”
“Meet my wife” he caressed Cynthia’s face which caused Sola to look away. “The woman I married that ended up sleeping with my father”
“Did he tell you that was what he wanted me to do?” Sola responded to shame her husband who was ranting frantically?
“Didn’t you claim you loved me, why didn’t you fight it to the last when everyone was on the issue? You should have stuck with the initial decision, rather than satisfying the lust you already had for the man who brought me into this world” everything Victor said hurt Sola to the core. He was right wasn’t he? Apart from where he said lust for his father. Sola would’ve never thought of having his father as a sugar daddy on a normal day, that was how much she held high her morals.
They walked out of her presence to Victor’s bedroom, leaving Sola embarrassed with a fountain of tears. With the last strength she had, she managed to go to the bathtub where she could cry with the water running and hiding her voice.
Will I be able to cope with this?
Sola tiptoed out of her room to make her way to the kitchen without having to lay her eyes on her husband and his mistress. The last encounter was still devastating for her and she would live with that scar every day. The sound of the both of them making love had kept her up all night and it didn’t seem like it was going to stop anytime soon so she had to get a cup of coffee. Unfortunately for the young wife, she heard movements in her kitchen. Could it be Cynthia? She asked herself. But Sola wasn’t waiting around to find out. She raced back into her room.
The hurt and pain made her think of a million and one way to hurt Victor back and make him pay for every tear she had shed. Two hours had passed and there was no movement or sound coming from Victor’s room or anywhere around the house.
Now the coast was clear. She went to the living room first, only to find a piece of paper from her husband.
Don’t expect me home for the next three days. Let anyone who care to know that I am with all that matters to me.
“Nonsense!” she said as she squeezed the paper and flung it away. But at least, she would have the house all to herself for three days to think. But the thought of him with another woman made her tremble. Three whole days. They didn’t even go for their own honeymoon for three hours and now he was taking his mistress. That thought alone brought out a fresh new tear from her eyes. But she was ready to make the most of her three day freedom so she jumped into the shower and took a cold bath. As the water ran through her body, every sense in her body shivered. It’s been a while since she was touched by a man. It had been long she had her urges satisfied. The water was just doing that. After a few minute of shower, she made her way to the wardrobe to change into something fancy. And there it was, the sound of a knock on the door.
It had been a long while since she had physical contact with anyone. Probably because they were newlyweds so nobody paid a visit in a long while. She raced to the door to see who it was. With so much excitement, she opened the door and he was here again. The monster was back.
“Look at my wife looking gorgeous” she said as he brushed his fingers against her hair. The excitement rushed back into Sola’s body. Here Victor was touching her or was it a dream?
“Not even in a million years would I lay on you, whore” he whispered, sending Sola into a heart break mode.
“my mother said she called you all day and you didn’t pick up” he said pushing her aside.
“Why would I ignore your mother’s call?”
“Shut up! I know how much you want to take her husband away from her” he yelled.
“You wish” Before he could bash her with his hateful words, her phone rings and interrupts them.
“Pastor?” Why is he calling?” she asks herself. “Good morning sir”
“Good morning Sola, How are you and your husband doing?” pastor asked.
“We’re fine sir” she responded with speed.
“I have been calling victor’s number but it wasn’t reachable, I hope all is well?”
“I think his phone is… Maybe the network was bad sir” she lied. The good girl in her was far gone. Sola was now an effortless liar who could lie to her pastor without a single feeling of guilt.
“Are you sure? I hope all is well?” it was definitely suspicious. Pastor Kingsley was a very observant man. He usually sensed things even from a mile away. “Are you there Sola?”
“I’m with you and all is well sir, if things were bad, I would have told you” lies upon lies. Unending lies.
“I’ll try to continue his number and anytime you both are together, you can give me a call”
“Oh! Thanks so much sir. We’re grateful” she said laying flat on her bed.
“Are you back from your honeymoon? You and your husband haven’t been to church after the thanksgiving service we held for you”
“I don’t know when we will get back but I will ask my husband and call you back. You will definitely be the first to know when we come back”
“my warm regards to you husband” why does pastor Kingsley sound so worried on the phone. Sola wandered. He didn’t have to say much for her to notice it in his voice. Or had God said something? Every question was very important at this moment.
“I’ll tell him” Sola dropped her phone and sobs. “My marriage is supposed to be my testimony to singles on waiting. It’s what I get for disobeying. I was blindfolded by love”
The loud bang at her door startled her. “Your noise is disturbing me!” Victor yelled
“Please keep quiet, don’t make me do what I’m trying nod to do” this was the last call before he began to shut her up with punches. So she knew she had to be quiet.
To do this, she hid her face in her pillow to scream. Then she realized that she had been afraid for too long so she was going to shut the mouth of the beast even if it was going to cost her few punches.
“you can’t treat me like I’m just a woman you picked on the streets. You will speak to me with respect. That’s the least I deserve since you all turned me to your family whore”
“you will not speak about I and my family with disrespect” Victor pushed the door open, prompting Sola to jump off the bed.
“Maybe if your family do not come up with useless traditions, maybe and just maybe you’ll get the respect you think you deserve. I’m fed up of all this, I can’t continue to live in constant fear of you just few months into this marriage. Before it clocks five years then I would have died from this tension”
“I’m not begging you to stay am I?” Victor boasted. “Yeah right! You can’t, because you are too proud to face the world and admit this is not working. Let’s face reality and save ourselves this trauma and pain, let’s part ways”
“Please forgive me for Christ sake if you think this is my fault. We can go for professional counselling if you don’t want the church involved. This is too much for me to handle, I can’t bear it anymore” Sola pleaded, kneeling before Victor. For a moment, his face changed sympathetically like he was coming to his senses and listen to the bleeding heart of his wife.
“Are you done with your drama my wife? Now let me beg you” he lifts her up to himself.
“Please don’t push me to do something I’d regret. Stay away from my path and I will stay away from yours. Those five years you yearn for, will be the longest most miserable time of your life”
“Do you hate me that much?” Sola asked with a hoarse voice
“Hate is a string word my dear, I only can’t stand your presence” he walks away leaving Sola in hot bitter tears.
If you were Sola, what will you do?
