PART 25 “FLIRTATIOUS”
Opeyemi Akintunde
I was Mad! Extremely mad… How could F.D dump me after all I did for us to be together? I had to read his text over and over to be sure I got the meaning.
Already, I had sent my angry reply, but I couldn’t help but read the text again a few times.
My name is Promise, and I believe at this point in this story you would have called me names you think I deserve. Do I deserve to be labelled a bad person?
Well, It depends on who is judging.
Let me take you back a few years before meeting F.D…
If I can remember clearly, I was fifteen when I noticed I was not getting the attention every other girl my age was getting. At fifteen, not even one boy had told me I was beautiful and wanted to go on a date with me. I was in my last year in secondary school when I realized it.
My friends had dated a minimum of three boys in our six years in school but I had not gotten one boy who showed me the slightest interest.
I remember crying at home on that year’s Valentine’s Day. Most girls in my class got teddy bears and chocolates, but I got nothing, not even from a secret admirer. My mother had seen my swollen face, and all she needed to do was call my praise name to make me voice out my pain…
“Aduke Mii… what is wrong? Tell me who quarrelled with you and I will get the strongest warriors to fight them”
“Mummy… Am I ugly?”I asked without holding back
“Ugly ke? Who said that to you?” My mother’s fury was red hot as she was ready to rip the person apart.
“No one, but I know I am ugly”
“Why would you think that about yourself? You are specially created by the Almighty in His image and likeness” My mother tried to give me hope.
My mother took me to the toilet mirror,
“Promise, check out your pointed nose, your small lips, your small eyes… Your beautiful neck… What on earth is not beautiful about you?”
“But Mummy how come I didn’t get Valentine’s gift?”
My mother was dazed and dumbstruck for a few seconds
“You said what?”
“Mummy, all the girls in my school got Valentine’s gifts from boys, except me”
“All the girls?” My mother queried
“All the beautiful girls, the ugly girls like me didn’t get” I said
“Well, that’s because God is preparing better men who will give you better gifts in the future. For now, He is making you invisible to those boys in your school, so you can concentrate on having good grades that your future man will be proud of…..”
“Mummy, please don’t feed me fables, the future man is for the future, I need a boyfriend for now” I remember saying to her and she couldn’t hold back her laughter.
“Promise, You don’t need a boyfriend now, let me be your boyfriend, for now, let Jesus be your boyfriend now, let your books be your boyfriend now.”
My Mother decided to make my day by taking me out and celebrating Valentine’s day with me. I picked up a teddy bear and a box of chocolate which my mum paid for…
Thankfully, I came out with good grades since no boyfriend was distracting me from studying. There was therefore no delay in gaining admission to the university,
For the first two years I spent at the university I held on to my Mother’s words, hoping the future man would show up, but no he didn’t… By the end of my second year, I was angry and I challenged my mum.
Typical of her, She told me to be patient as she was praying for me.
I was done being patient, so I decided to ask for help. I had a roommate whose name was Sandra, she had boys in her palm, always flocking around her.
I wanted that too!
I engaged her in a conversation that birthed the new me…
PART 26 “FLIRTATIOUS”
Opeyemi Akintunde
“Sandra, how do you do it?” I asked with high expectations for the solution to my problem.
“Do what?” She replied as she was clueless about my admiration of her.
“Get boys to like you, date you?” I asked bluntly
“I don’t understand” She Opened her eyes widely
“Sandra, boys don’t ask me out,” I said soberly
“OK?,” She said raising her brow in a question form
“I don’t have a boyfriend, I mean no boy has ever asked me out,” I said in plain words.
Sandra went mute for a few seconds…
“Are you serious?” She asked in a whisper after she found her voice
“Yes”
“Well, that could be because of your holier than thou attitude… You know you don’t smile” She said like she was a Master in the relationship world.
“I smile” I argued
“You smile amongst your female friends” Sandra countered
“Girl, if you like a guy, fl!rt with him, and he will come running towards you. Guys are like dogs, have a bone before them and they come running after you…” She said like a Pro that she was
” Only few disciplined dogs will not follow a stranger’s bone, in the same way only few men do not run after a lady that flirts with them, but the majority does.” Sandra said
“Flirt?” I asked looking very ignorant
“Yes, smile at them, stare at them intentionally, lead them on, just like you wave a bone in front of a dog, fl!rt with a guy and he will come chasing after you…”
I became an expert for two years, I flirted my way into the hearts and pockets of guys. I derived joy in it. I became one of the most talked about girls on campus, but I guess my mother’s prayers were always with me. I never caught any of the incurable diseases in all my escapades.
After graduating, I became exhausted from being the one going after guys before they found me worthy. I resulted back to my mother’s opinion.
I told her I was still waiting for my future man, and she kept saying,
“God is preparing him, it is possible the young man is not yet ready”
I got a job as a banker, and through fl!rting, I got good clients to bank with us. I ended up sl33ping with most of them. I did this for three years.
By the time I was 23, I had lost my appetite for fl!rting as I was the one doing the chasing and none of the men I flirted my way to their hearts found me worthy to settle down with.
I decided to return to my mother again.
“Mummy, the future man still has not shown up, I have been meeting unfortunate boys who use and dump me”
“That’s because you have been doing it your way… Did you ever pray on any of these guys before saying yes to them”
“No”… I said but I couldn’t tell her I was the one pulling them to me, therefore after having s3x with me, they lost their appetites for me. One of the disadvantages of fl!rting for me was that after the men ended up sl33ping with me, there is always an instant hatred and disgust for me.
“Promise you are not an ordinary child, you are a child of promise, I waited eight years to have you, therefore your life cannot follow the waves, you can’t be like everybody. I know the Lord has prepared a man for you, but you need to sit with God, be calm and hold your peace….”
“Mummy so what should I do? I am 23 already, some of my friends got married at 20…. should I just fold my hands and wait for Mr. Right?”
“Ruth got busy on the field, it was on the field Boaz saw her… Promise get busy, stop waiting for Mr. Right … Work, get closer to God and Mr Right will come when you least expect…” My mother would always say.
I waited all through age 23, age 24, age 25 and a few months of age 26. It was three months after my 26th birthday that I met Bishop Tolu Texas and he prophesied to me that I would meet my husband that same month…
A lot of you reading this story would have thought of me as being cheap when I rushed at Shola’s interest in me. Let me state for the records; Shola was the first man to ever show interest in me without me facilitating it.
He was the first man to gush about me, telling me on the flight how beautiful I was. That had never happened to me before.
Looking back now, I believe the encounter that I had with Bishop Tolu Texas, some hours earlier attracted favour to me and made me all glorious that day, hence Shola was attracted to me…
Prior to that, I had never had a man tell me I was beautiful and wanted to have something serious with me.
I immediately connected Shola to the prophecy, and just like I had learnt from fl!rting to rush a man when they had eyes on you, I hurriedly contacted him and before he slipped off my hands we got married.
It was therefore a rude shock the day I saw F.D in our hotel room and there was an instant deep likeness and attraction towards him.
I couldn’t and can’t still explain the feeling of excitement in my heart and simultaneously, the feeling of loss…
I ran after him wanting to know more about him, I wanted to be sure if I had met him before but he denied knowing me.
I returned to the hotel room, but I couldn’t think of anything else. That was when the old devil in me resurfaced…
The Flirtatious spirit…
I wanted to know why my heart responded the way it did and I believe you know how it all went down in 24hours…
Fast-forward to leaving the hotel in a rush after Shola saw us at the Blue Carnival, my life became hell afterwards…
Shola despised me, to the point of calling me a dog, a prostitute, a cheap being and so on…
When we got to his house, he moved my things to another room and for two years before his demise, he never touched me…
His demise… What’s the true story behind his demise?
Heart attack? or something else? Well, that’s a story for another day …
