Nigerian gospel singers are taking turns on social media to join their voices with the Nigerian Youths requesting a halt to police brutality and harassment especially on youths for no tangible serious reason.
Following Dunsin Oyekan’s plea on Instagram to Nigeria Police to do good, Steve Crown’s importune to end SARS, Leke Adeboye’s post on Instagram requesting for complete removal of SARS, and Jaymikee’s prayers with a petition to terminate SARS since it’s is no longer acting in line with what it was purposely created for, Nathaniel Bassey, Mercy Chinwo and Tolulope Toluwase p.k.a Tolucci join the protest.
Few moments ago, Tolucci and Nathaniel Bassey took to various platforms to also share their experiences on how they were harassed by SARS.
Nathaniel Bassey’s post:
Let me share my own experience.
I lived in Surulere Lagos years ago. And one of those days, I went to get some money. It was about 2 or so bundles of 500 naira notes. I was on a bike when I was stopped by some policemen. Immediately one of them noticed the cash on me, he beckoned on his OIC, as if to say “Oga? we have a big fish”, they immediately ended their stop and search & whisked me into their danfo bus. They drove away, and kept going into very quiet streets. Well, thank God it wasn’t at night. They took my phone, and then asked for the money. I then pleaded to at least alert my family to let them know where I was. Guess what the leader said to me? “How are you even sure you would see them again..?” You can imagine how I felt hearing that.
Anyway, by divine providence they let me down after taking some of the cash. I don’t want to imagine what may have happened if it was at night, or that I had some forex in large quantity. Perhaps they thought people had seen them take me away, and in the event of any further sinister act, may have been traced. Or just a case of God’s mercy and grace speaking for me.
The then commissioner of police tried to identify that team after we made a formal report, but couldn’t. I’m one of the very fortunate ones to escape such. Some may not have been that fortunate. And that’s why we must REFORM OUR POLICE. Beyond ending SARS, we must demand a total overhaul of the system. They can end SARS and then maybe call it another name eg, TARS, tactical armed robbers squad. But If the agents involved are not transformed, things would only get worse.
We must go down to the very root to fix this issue. Including those of their welfare. We can’t afford these tears anymore.
That said, we know there are good eggs in the force. Those should be identified, encouraged and made to spear head change.
But as it is now, things can’t remain like this. I SAY NO TO POLICE BRUTALITY, AND ADVOCATE THE REFORM OUR POLICE FORCE. GOD BLESS OUR POLICE FORCE AND GOD BLESS NIGERIA.
Tolucci’s post:
Two types of Robbers in Nigeria. One is un-authorised and operates from the underworld. The other is authorised and LICENSED by government to STEAL, KILL & DESTROY. It is named SARS.
One of God’s benevolence to an individual aside from Sound health will be – not having anything to do at a Police Station. One experience will practically make you loose hope on our Nation.
God bless every protester standing on the streets. May this be the beginning of the much needed change in our nation. Like SARS on the streets – Oh ye SARS behind the office curtains will be next. You have killed much more with your pen than guns
From Ajah to Chevron to Lekki Drive to Ijebu-Ode to Ibadan to Osogbo to Akure to Benin and further – you find them everywhere tailing young folk in private vehicles. That’s if you a not the one being tailed. Is it a crime to be young?
Jesus didn’t condone evil. It is ungodly to see evil and not speak or condemn it openly. That’s just not Christlike
These guys dress down, even wear Trad. attires and bear arms . How on earth do you identify them seperate from Robbers.
I remember one of them asking me at ChevronDrive “how old are you that you are telling me you run your own business?” Na so e easy to start business for Nigeria. At that point, with such mindset – it was needless dragging with them.
To hit the road, I’ve got to hide my laptop under the car seat. Delete all FX transactions from my phones before switching on the engine. Despite – it’s still criminal to be young and drive a good car. They have outlived their usefulness
#ENDSars is a reflection of the collective frustration of every young Nigerian struggling to live a decent life despite the decadent system and absence of critical infrastructure. WE ARE WAKING UP;
At inception, we don’t get to see them. We only hear of their exploits in nailing criminals. NOW – you are a suspect if you are young and drive a good car. NAILED if you’ve got a laptop with you. DEAD! if you earn FX legitimately and you’ve got alerts on your phone #EndSARS
