“Evelyn, I don’t know what came over me. I was so rude and …” Then her phone rang.
“Hello! Yes… I’m Angela! What?”
Evelyn rose up in a jiffy and stood in front of her until she finished her call.
“Tell me, what happened?”
“A woman found my purse containing all my cards. She found it at the train station and promised to wait for me to collect it.”
“Really? That’s so kind of her. Let’s go immediately.” Evelyn said.
They left for the train station and met the young woman of South American origin. She handed it to her and introduced herself as Mariana. They thanked her profusely and she was all smiles. Evelyn noticed a man was watching them from the coffee shop. As soon as the woman left, the man approached them.
“Do you know that woman?”
“No!” Angela replied.
“She is a Professor and preacher.” He exclaimed.
“Oh really? Thank you for that information.” Angela responded with a smile.
The man still wanted to reveal more but the women found it awkward,
“She was with me when she saw the purse around here. She was telling me about Jesus Christ and His love for me. I was curious to know her before allowing her to speak further about Jesus. I was blown off my feet when she told me her profile. She hesitated at first but I insisted she must tell me. The way she presented Jesus Christ in an intellectual way convinced me that Jesus Christ is real. I was an atheist before I met her.”
Angela wasn’t interested in the discussion but Evelyn desired to encourage the man who had introduced himself as Bernie.
“So, you have now surrendered your life to Jesus?”
“Yes! What many preachers, books, messages and friends have failed to do, Mariana did with wisdom and ease.” He said.
“No, God did it through her. The seed of God’s word sown in your heart by others has finally yielded the beautiful fruit of salvation. It’s a joint efforts by God’s grace ” Evelyn explained.
“You are right. I was captured by her words when she approached me. I had thought she wanted to ask for some coins to buy a coffee or something else but she eventually asked me to accept Jesus. I’m glad that I yielded…”
Angela tapped her to dismiss the man but he continued with his testimony.
“I knew my heart yearned for something precious to fill it. The more I tried to satisfy it, the more empty I felt. I’m glad my heart is at rest now.”
When Evelyn perceived the man wasn’t ready to leave soon she encouraged him to keep serving Jesus and find a church to attend on a regular basis. When they were about to leave, the man dipped his hand into his pocket to bring out a paper to show her what’s written on it. Two passport photographs also dropped on the ground. As he was about to pick them, Angela picked them up and was shocked.
“Sir, who are these?” She demanded with a troubled look.
Bernie was at a loss when she asked him. Evelyn still held the paper when her friend asked him again to tell him the whereabouts of the girls.
“Do you know them? What’s the problem?” Evelyn asked anxiously.
Angela faced her, “This is Annie! This is my daughter for God’s sake!”
Bernie pleaded with them to leave the area to avoid the prying eyes of the people. He decided the spill the beans when Angela threatened to call the police.
“I have a friend who loves children of African origin. He gave me these passport photographs to give a man who would arrive the train station any moment from now. I don’t know anything about them. Please, I’m innocent…”
“Innocent? This is child molestation! This is evil for goodness sake! Who’s the man? Where is he?” Angela shouted at him.
Evelyn tried to calm her down and turn to Bernie, “Where is your friend? Are you willing to cooperate with us?”
“Yes! I’m willing to cooperate but I don’t want anything to tarnish my reputation. I know the law and work in a good company.”
“Reputation? What are you doing with these pictures? My God! Who have I offended? Annie.. My Annie…” She replied Bernie and broke into tears.
Bernie’s phone rang and he promised the caller to be there in some minutes.
“Who’s that? Is that the man?” Angela asked him sharply.
“Yes! But let’s go about it with wisdom. These men are dangerous. Please, try to understand.” Bernie pleaded.
Evelyn tried to persuade her to remain calm and even thank God for His leading.
When they got back to the train station, Evelyn and Angela stood around the bookshop and watched Bernie. When the man arrived, Angela …
A POLE IN THE DARK (Episode 20)
When they got back to the train station, Evelyn and Angela stood around the bookshop and watched Bernie. When the man arrived, Angela wanted to go and meet him but Evelyn had to pull her to caution her.
“I know that man. I know him.” She told her sternly.
“Really? Who’s he? But let’s wait for Bernie’s signal.” Evelyn cautioned her but she didn’t respond.
They stood there watching the men talking while Bernie glanced at them at intervals. There was an exchange of items which prompted Angela to doubt the authencity of Bernie’s claim. They went to the open area of the train station and the women followed after them.
Angela’s impatience grew as Bernie seemed to have neglected them. Evelyn wasn’t happy also but she persuaded her to give him time. She asked Angela what she knew about the man
“He’s a member of our church.”
“What? A member of your church? Is he in the children department?”
“What kind of question is that?” Angela replied sharply.
“I’m sorry. I’m surprised to hear that he is from your church.”
Bernie then gave them a signal when the man left. Angela outran her to reach him. He told them the girls were in the same city and would be taken to Spain the following day. Angela asked for more details but he advised them to report it to the police. Evelyn was skeptical to take that decision based on what they heard without any concrete proof. After a while, he volunteered to assist them in exposing them.
“After all, Jesus died and paid for my sins. Not His sins but my own sins. I’m ready to assist you in securing the release of your daughter from these monsters. If it means pain for me, I’m ready to bear it.” Bernie confessed.
“I know our meeting wasn’t coincidence but planned by God. I’m just amazed how God is leading us.” Evelyn said confidently.
Angela asked him how to go about the situation. He pondered on that question and was about to answer when his phone rang. After the call, he informed them that his friend would meet his customer at the hotel near the popular gym in their city.
“I know that particular hotel. Wait…My God! I have an idea.” Angela suggested.
They looked at Angela strangely because of her attitude. She asked Bernie if he would be available in the evening. Angela spoke in her dialect to convey her intention to Evelyn while he looked on. They met later in the evening and went to Room 204 where Pastor Abraham used as his special prayer consulting room. When she was about to knock, she heard him giving instructions to someone on how to enter the hotel. Angela and Evelyn took the left side and climbed downstairs instead of the elevator.
As soon as they turned to go to the waiting room, Angela saw Kate with Annie. She froze and tapped her friend to hide. Evelyn listened to her as she whispered, “That’s my daughter. That’s Annie!”
Angela and Evelyn took the stairs to outrun Kate. They reached there before Kate came out of the elevator with Annie. Immediately they entered Room 204, she told Evelyn to stay at alert and she rushed downstairs to meet Bernie. She told him everything that had happened and she called the police. While still awaiting the arrival of the police, she informed the hotel authority. They waded into action by calling the police again and went upstairs for normal procedure.
When they reached there, Angela knocked on the door but there was no response. She knocked again but no one answered. Then, one of the hotel staff knocked and asked for permission to see him. After several knocks on the door, Pastor Abraham came out and saw them.
“Hello, what can I do for you?” He asked the hotel staff.
He was about to answer when the police arrived. Pastor Abraham almost banged the door when he saw the policemen. The hotel staff quickly blocked the door and they entered the room. Angela was in tears when she saw her daughter with the small graven image of a child tied around her neck. Annie jumped off from the bed when she saw her mother and hugged her tightly. Angela didn’t mind the shock on Kate’s face when the policemen caught them. They were interrogated, found some evidences and were later led away by the policemen.
Evelyn was surprised to see how Pastor Abraham’s Bible was adorned with “Repent and believe in Jesus Christ” label. She couldn’t correlate his pastoral title with his hideous character. She asked Angela again to confirm if he was a Pastor indeed because his confessions were shameful and evil.
“This same man defiled me on this same bed but I thank God for delivering my daughter from their evil plans. I’m sure Kate, Pastor Abraham, Matt, Amos and the rest will rot in jail for their evil deeds.” Angela said with tears as they left the hotel. Based on the advice of the authority, they went to the hospital for checkup.
As soon as they left the hospital…
